Description

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Under general supervision, provides laboratory testing support for the Lab Automation Scientist II/III, Microbiologists, and Laboratory Managers. This position will consist primarily of routine laboratory work including preparation of microbiology media and solutions, filling tubes, ordering and stocking supplies, preparation for panel production, general housekeeping, routine equipment maintenance, and operation of automated laboratory equipment. Special tasks may be also assigned on a routine basis and as required.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparation and dispensing of microbiology media and solutions using aseptic technique.
  • Preparation for daily plate production runs including the opening and labeling of panels, robotic tips, and tubes.
  • May assist in the preparation of novel and comparator compound stock solutions.
  • Participates in all aspects of panel production runs including setup, production, QC, and cleanup.
  • Assists with quality assurance investigations involving test compounds and reference strains. 
  • Carries out recommended corrective action for quality assurance.
  • Calibrates equipment, conducts routine maintenance and helps troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
  • Seeks technical direction from the Automation Scientist II/III or Laboratory Manager with specific instrumentation problems.
  • Assists with MIC testing and QC evaluations on each day of panel production following CLSI guidelines and employing appropriate reference strains.
  • Complies with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements of the laboratory.
  • Documents and reports variances to the Laboratory Manager. Participates in the Quality Assurance program within the laboratory.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and makes recommendations to the Laboratory Manager for resolution of identified problems/errors.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Primary supervision is received from the Manager

Research and Development.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional supervision is exercised over laboratory assistants.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science or related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE.  Requires adherence to aseptic technique and basic microbiology skills. Prior liquid handling automation experience, knowledge of CLSI guidelines, and antibacterial susceptibility testing is desirable.
