Senior Vice President, Business Advising

The SVP of Business Advising (BAS), leads, manages, advises and provides strategic direction to the team of Business Advisors which consult (1:1 and 1:many) with potential and existing small and medium-sized business owners and partners. Business Advisors provide assistance, guidance and business related support to clients that may be seeking to access small business loans or investments from the Alliance. The BAS Team provides overall business planning, works to enhance financial performance and the operations of our client businesses.  Partner development, grant fulfillment, community outreach, product development and other related responsibilities assigned from time to time by the EMT are also functions of the Team. As a Team within the Alliance, BAS needs to be flexible and nimble.


Essential Functions:

  • Manage a team of (presently) 6-8 Business Advisors and support staff
  • Develop and manage annual budget for the team
  • Set strategy for growth and expansion of services and support of the lending and investment businesses
  • Develop and produce key elements of annual SBA grant that supports the sustainability of the team
  • Training new, and supporting current, BAS Team members with goals, objectives, systems, protocols, CRM/V+, Payroll and Expense cloud packages, company policies and the like
  • Communicate strategic direction to the BAS Team, set tactical goals, establish metrics, measure and execute on Plan
  • Represent the BAS Team at Capital Deployment Senior Leadership meetings, providing guidance on monthly production, strategic opportunities for growth and areas of increased support for business lines
  • Build strategic relationships with key regional and local community and industry groups to help build awareness of the services and products the Alliance can offer, in furtherance of the overall production goals of the Capital Deployment Group 
  • Offer fresh input and perspectives that address the unique challenges facing minority, women-owned, veteran and other small businesses operating in under-served communities, enabling the BAS team to expand its services to underserved companies
  • Set the direction and focus of the CDC Small Business Source Newsletter
  • Coordinate with Servicing Team to assist distressed borrowers who are delinquent, or in arrears with loan payments as needed
  • Monitor operational activity and effectiveness of results of the BAS program and advisers.  Establish objective tracking metrics for advisers and programs. Prepare internal reports as appropriate
  • Develop instruments or analysis to evaluate program effectiveness; implement program changes in response to results as needed
  • Maintain activities and performance to comply with funding obligations and program objectives. Track client engagement activity and hours in V+ system, pull data for reporting as required by grantors
  • Conduct semi-annual performance reviews for each member of the BAS Team
  • Attend relevant networking and industry events for the purpose of finding new borrowers for CDC Small Business Finance.


  • Strong background / experience in for profit small business
  • At least 10 years of prior consultation experience and providing technical assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs 
  • Prior small business operation and ownership a major advantage
  • Experienced in strategic planning 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies within diverse communities and provide presentations
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of the SBA’s Community Advantage and 504 Programs
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and assignment loads of multiple BAS advisers and multiple client advising assignments 
  • Experience managing a consulting team that is focused on improving the performance or growth of small businesses
  • Able to coach, motivate and develop direct reports
  • Experience leading a team through expansion period
  • Familiarity and experience working with small businesses operating within under-sourced communities. 


Bachelor’s Degree.  A Master of Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis in a specific business area, such as law, finance or marketing preferred
