SUMMARY


The Communications Manager is responsible for assisting with writing and editing for a wide variety of communication initiatives, collateral, news posts and content for quarterly magazine. Assist with public relations and communication initiatives. As part of the communications team, assists with media relations efforts, communications campaigns, writing and editing of marketing communication products and conference collateral. The position provides assistance with review and editing of letters and documents on government relations/public affairs initiatives for the Association.  As part of the communications team, assists with social media campaigns. This position reports to the executive director of communications and marketing.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Other duties may be assigned)  

  • Writes news briefs, feature articles, and creative content for print and online publications, flyers and communication products. 
  • Assists with marketing communication for conferences, including writing/editing scripts and collateral. 
  • Assists with media outreach to traditional media and campus media contacts in national markets.
  • Assists with writing and distribution of news releases and assists with review and editing of member-related alerts. 
  • Assists with coordination of content for member news and joint releases with member institutions and partners. 
  • Write testimonials and bios to facilitate communication projects.
  • Assists with the development of media lists and event calendar postings to increase HACU’s positive exposure in the media.
  • Assists with deliverables of HACU ads with media partners and scheduling of ads for production. 
  • Writes/edits for The Voice of Hispanic Higher Education magazine, a quarterly publication, published four times a year.
  • Coordinates with internal staff on distribution of magazine to subscribers and advertising placements for issues of The Voice magazine. 
  • Proofreads/edits official communications, publications, website content and government/public affairs communication from HACU’s D.C. and California office. 
  • Social media postings and news coordination for newsletter with Social Media manager.   
  • Other duties may be assigned.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Marketing or a related field.
  • Minimum of three to five years of experience in news writing, and editing. 
  • Writing Samples 
  • Experience in public relations and media relations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of content marketing. 
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Experience with posting social media content on platforms, including, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong understanding of Associated Press style.

PREFERRED

Experience in higher education or nonprofit sector communications.


LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Strong communication skills in written and oral English required. Must be able to interact effectively with all staff levels. 


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Basic analytical and math skills. 


REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to interpret data and design graphs and materials to better communicate message and mission. 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical, intellectual and other demands described herein are representative and not all inclusive of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Office setting includes sitting or standing, computer work, answering phones, among other office duties. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work usually takes place in clean, pleasant, and comfortable office settings. Employee will work a standard 40-hour a week; however, longer hours may be necessary at times. Conferences and events may require longer hours of work on a constantly changing schedule, including work on weekends and evenings. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
