Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


Provide leadership on media relations and external outreach, including developing, planning and strategic oversight. The Director of Public Relations will proactively develop and implement strategic plans to generate positive publicity about U.S. Soccer and its overall mission and objectives. The person in this position will work closely with all areas of the Federation to manage press relations and develop messaging, including crisis communication needs.  

  • Develops and guides the implementation of a comprehensive and strategic communications plan for U.S. Soccer that will create the maximum awareness of the organization’s priorities and goals
  • Works with all departments to develop storytelling and messaging for all areas of the Federation, including National Teams, Sporting and Commercial
  • Oversees development of messaging to, and relationships with, key business, lifestyle, technology and other non-soccer/sports outlets to broaden coverage of U.S. Soccer initiatives
  • Oversees the development and growth of U.S. Soccer’s influencer program, creating a more long-term and consistent approach
  • Manages communications staff focused on driving publicity for the Federation
  • Guides the drafting of press releases, talking points and all other external communications
  • Collaborates with team press officers and other PR and Content staff to ensure proper execution of messaging through all channels (website, social, etc.)
  • Oversees U.S. Soccer presence at events, conferences, panels, and other external opportunities to help drive key Federation messages
  • Manages relationship with outside PR agencies to help develop and execute strategic communications plan
  • At times, handles media inquiries for executives and coordinates any necessary guidance and media training      
  • Oversees media monitoring, including providing daily and event or situation-based coverage reports and developing and sharing reports and analysis of coverage to show impact
  • Works with internal departments to keep them up-to-date on all external messaging to ensure consistency across the organization
  • Works with Chief Communications Officer to handle all crisis communications needs
  • Serves as spokesperson for organization as needed  

  


Requirements

 Education, Work Experience, Special Skills/Knowledge required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related discipline
  • 10+ years’ related experience in public relations/communications field
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
  • Must have prior experience interacting with media and proactively pitching stories 
  • Strong understanding of soccer preferred
  • Strong presentation and storytelling skills, including the ability to put together high-level professional decks
  • Quick learner who can function well in fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Full-time position, minimum 40 hour work week with some travel required
