Description

Reporting directly to the Community Engagement Coordinator, the Content Development Specialist’s (CDS) primary function is to source, develop and produce content for use across a variety of media, including video, print and digital/social. The content produced will feature primarily Detroit at Work customers and Grow Detroit’s Young Talent participants, with a particular focus on scholarship programs supported by the Detroit Future Fund initiative (ARPA), such as Skills for Life and Learn to Earn.


The CDS will maintain a database of potential success stories across a range of programs, and will work with the Marketing Communications team and other programs to select candidates for story development. Once selected, the CDS will be responsible for:

· Liaising with program personnel to secure initial background stories

· Contacting the story subject to arrange interviews and secure further information

· Conducting interviews and writing up proposed stories

· Arranging photography or videography as appropriate

· Working with external partners to support the development of higher quality photography or video production as needed

· Developing pitches for stories intended for placement with media

· Providing fully-developed stories formatted to meet DESC’s requirement for Federal/State reporting 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


· Provide excellent customer service.

· Develop close relationships with program teams to proactively initiate identification of potential success stories across key programs

· Develop and maintain a database of candidate stories across a range of programs that can be accessed at short notice and suggested for further development

· Secure background information/contact details on each candidate to include in database

· Agree with Marketing Communications and program staff which potential stories should be developed into full stories

· Conduct interviews and develop finished stories for print / digital

· Originate photography or video for use to support identified stories, developing finished stories for use on social media

· Provide stories correctly formatted for reporting to Federal and State government

· Work to support third parties (external production companies, City of Detroit media relations) in developing stories using our content, facilitating interviews and videography as may be required

· Systematically collect limited, anecdotal information from program participants (i.e. Skills for Life program) on a monthly basis to include in project reporting. Such activities might include sourcing quotes from participants on how partaking in the program is improving their life (particularly since the pandemic)

· Provide a selection of photography of key project activities and curate such photos in a shared folder, making available for reporting or for use in marketing, or on websites, including the City of Detroit website.

Requirements

The Content Development Specialist must have a sound basis of understanding in creative writing or journalism and must be able to perform and serve as a link between the Communications and Program teams. Excellent communications skills are a key requirement, along with the ability to take direction and work toward established goals with a high degree of attention to detail. Must have high degree of experience and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of or experience working with video editing software or Photoshop would be beneficial. Must have demonstrated experience and be able to consistently exhibit excellent verbal and written skills. 


EDUCATION:

An Associate’s degree or higher in journalism, video production, communications, creative writing, marketing or a related discipline is preferred. Three (3) years’ experience working in a fast-paced agency or client digital media environment or in the news media would be considered a benefit, but is not required.

LICENSES:

Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License – Position requires field work.

Background check and drug screen required.
