Description
Job Summary: Performs all the duties that a Medical Technologist job description entails as well as supervisory duties for the Hematology/Blood Bank Department with oversight by the Laboratory Director of Operations.
Responsibilities:
- Review of all QC, maintenance, checklists, etc. in the Hematology/Blood Bank Department and to have the Laboratory Director of Operation s review also and sign off.
- Teach new employees how to operate the analyzers, test kits, etc. in the Hematology/Blood Bank Department. Competency of the Hematology/Blood Bank staff will be conducted by the Department Supervisor.
- Keep the Hematology/Blood Bank Department current with all Joint Commission regulations
- Annually review Hematology/Blood Bank procedures/policies or write procedures/policies and have them reviewed and approved by the appropriate personnel.
- Represent Management and handle issues on weekends worked.
- Answer any Hematology/Blood Bank technical questions from the Laboratory staff
Requirements
Education and Experience:
- B.S. Degree in Medical Technology or related field or an Associate Degree in Medical Technology
- Successful completion of a registry or certification exam given by a Nationally recognized certifying agency
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Set appropriate examples in the achievement of the above mentioned responsibilities.
- Work in a variety of situations (heavy workload, stressful, etc)
- May work alone or in various groups under direct supervision of the Laboratory Director of Operations
- Effectively operate Laboratory equipment, unassisted
- Knowledgeable in medical technology
- Possess a great work ethic
- Must be able to handle stress of working efficiently with frequent interruptions
- Must be able to multi-task
- May be requested to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups.
- May be responsible for the operation of the Laboratory during their shift
- Possess strong communication skills
- Must maintain a clean and professional appearance
- Must follow the Hospital's Personal appearance policy
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting, standing and walking 3-6 hours per day
- Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
- Close eye work and color discrimination
- Daily exposure to Bloodborne pathogens, biohazardous materials and body fluids.
