Job Title: Carpenter 

Department: Scenery 

Reports To: Technical Director 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Seasonal Full-time 

Pay Tier: 4 

Compensation: $750-$800/week (37 weeks), competitive benefits package including health insurance, dental insurance, voluntary supplemental benefits, 401(k), vacation, sick time, and paid holidays. 

Desired Start Date: September 13, 2021  


Under close supervision of the Technical Director and shop foreperson, the Carpenter constructs, builds, and loads the set. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Uses power tools including table and crosscut saws. 
  • Works with wood, metal, plastics, and other materials. 
  • Welding and rigging experience a plus 
  • Understands and interprets working drawings and models. 
  • Assists in researching and developing mechanical, electronic, and pneumatic systems. 
  • Develops both standard and non-standard set pieces. 
  • Collects off-site materials. 
  • Facilitates problem solving with actors, crews, stage manager, and other theater staff. 
  • Repairs the set during the run of the play as needed. 
  • Strikes the set. 
  • Creativity is a positive in this role.

High School diploma plus a minimum of three years of carpentry experience. 

Technical Skills/Knowledge: 

General knowledge of tools, rigging, and building. 

Mathematical Skills:   

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

  • Ability to repeatedly move, transport, or position objects weighing up to 50-70 lbs. either alone or with assistance.

  • Must be able to ascend and descend steps, ladders, and scaffolding.
