Description

Position Description: 

The Teacher Assistant will assist the teacher in all areas of classroom activities to create an environment which fosters independence, confidence, creativity and respect. These activities include, but not limited to: Preparing essential materials, tracking classroom supplies, monitoring and correcting children’s language, lesson planning, teaching, observing and documenting academic, language, and behavioral achievements, and assisting with report writing. 


This is an at-will, hourly (non-exempt) position for 196 days each fiscal year and the working hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech is a private school that teaches listening and spoken language for children with hearing loss.  The candidate should have experience teaching in early elementary grades.  Enjoy a small class size and work with an experienced educator.  Professional development opportunities are provided throughout the school year.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Helping teacher with lesson preparation and setting up equipment 
  • Prepare materials needed for implementation of lessons (manipulatives, worksheets, art supplies, etc.) 
  • Documenting children’s progress academically and developmentally 
  • Encourage children in appropriate conversation during snack, lunch and recess 
  • Serve as an active part of the team that works with the individual child: classroom teacher, speech-language pathologist, and other therapists as appropriate (physical, occupational, oral motor) 
  • Playground supervision 
  • Light cleaning and housekeeping tasks to maintain a neat and organized classroom 
  • Assist with discipline of children as needed 

Other Duties: 

  • Attend faculty meetings and professional development opportunities 
  • Support Clarke’s mission, special events and/or development initiatives 
  • Assist in writing documents for periodic re-accreditation, as needed 
  • Compile classroom supply order each fall 

Physical demands: 

  • The ability to lift 25 pounds 
  • The ability to move quickly in case of an emergency 


Requirements

 Education, licenses, certifications, skills and experience 

  • High school graduate 
  • Experience working with children ages 2-7 required
  • Training in child development through college courses or childcare certification courses 
  • Knowledge or training in teaching children who are deaf or hand of hearing to listen and talk 
  • CPR/First Aid certification 
  • Microsoft Office Suite knowledge 
  • Great organization and planning skills 
  • Collaboration and teamwork abilities 
  • Compassionate, positive and encouraging attitude
