Each year our attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Position: Legal Aid Chicago seeks a full-time Intake Specialist in our Client Screening Unit (CSU). CSU is the central entry point for applicants seeking legal assistance from Legal Aid Chicago. This position is located in Austin at Westside Health Authority, 5422 W. Division St., in Chicago. A hybrid arrangement (2-3 days in person, 2-3 days remote) is possible.


Intake Specialists register all applicants for services in an electronic case management system, conduct screening interviews to determine their eligibility for services, gather basic case facts, and identify basic legal problems. Applications for services are accepted by phone, online, in person, and through referrals from community partners. Intake Specialists apply Legal Aid Chicago’s eligibility guidelines and priorities to determine the appropriate level of service for clients. Intake Specialists provide referrals and give limited legal advice under the direction and supervision of attorneys. When more extended service may be warranted, they schedule appointments with one of Legal Aid Chicago’s Practice Groups. Accurate timekeeping is also required.

  • A minimum of a high school diploma, college degree preferred
  • Computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral and written communication skills
  • Be well organized, detail-oriented, and able to follow written instructions
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Interest in working with low-income and elderly clients
