Organization Overview

Every year, thousands of young people in Philadelphia dropout of school. This decades-long dropout crisis impacts individual lives by sustaining the cycle of underemployment and poverty, and threatens Philadelphia’s ability to thrive.

YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School was founded in 1992 to give high school dropouts a second chance and the opportunity to build a brighter future for themselves and their community. Our innovative program offers young at-risk adults a high school diploma, valuable job skills, and the opportunity to learn and grow in a community-oriented, supportive environment. We prepare our students for further educational attainment and meaningful careers as they become leaders and contributing members in a stronger Philadelphia.


YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School’s mission is to empower young adults (17-20 year-olds) to develop skills and connect to opportunities by fostering an environment of love, support, and respect for their whole person. Students graduate high school and successfully transition to college and career as critically conscious leaders, committed to positive change for themselves and their communities.



YBPCS’ values are deeply held and come from a love of humanity and a perspective that views each student as a community asset. The program’s three core values - respect, excellence and perseverance – are reinforced through all aspects of the program.

Young people in Philadelphia who are disconnected will build skills and access resources and opportunities to achieve economic stability and personal development, and become critically conscious leaders within their communities.


Job Summary:

The Dean of Culture and Equity (DCE) has two primary areas of responsibility: 1) leading the School’s restorative culture and climate, and 2) leading the School’s full-time AmeriCorps programming. The DCE will support and build a community that embraces cultural respect and understanding of others where all students feel safe and loved, and create a common language and expectations for all stakeholders in regard to restorative and DEI practices in the school. 


Climate-and-Culture Operations:

  • Create vision for school culture that clearly articulates climate/culture standards; 
  • Lead implementation of YouthBuild Philly Restorative Practices Community Building Framework with all school based stakeholders and provide appropriate professional learning opportunities for staff;
  • Establish clear expectations for staff and students on school routines including arrival, dismissal, and transitions;
  • In coordination with school leadership, lead student onboarding process;
  • Manage school behavior response for student referrals, suspensions, and expulsions;
  • Manage student information and restorative discipline records accurately; 
  • Facilitate and manage all student life activities including student incentives, trips, village/community meetings, or service events;
  • Serve as the lead facilitator for student service hour completion;
  • Provide ongoing staff development related to school culture policies, DEI initiatives, trauma informed practices, and culturally responsive teaching;
  • Serve as an extension of the school leadership team by regularly participating in programmatic meetings, providing staff formal and informal feedback, and conducting school walkthroughs;
  • Regularly and proactively communicate all school culture policies, policy changes, behavior response actions, and event logistics to all stakeholders

AmeriCorps Culture of Service:

  • Believe deeply in the mission and values of YouthBuild Philadelphia;
  • Support the recruitment and selection of new AmeriCorps Members each year;
  • Develop, schedule, and implement a pre-service training for full-time members;
  • Plan and coordinate all-school service projects during the 9/11 Day of Service and Martin Luther King Jr. Day; 
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with local community organizations in order to collaborate on service projects and utilize partnerships to meet program goals;
  • Develop an Ethic of Service in student-members by overseeing the development of a meaningful community service-learning curriculum and corresponding service projects; 
  • Oversee the implementation and management of the following extra-curricular programs: volunteer recruitment and engagement, internal and external mentoring, Youth Congress, after-school tutoring, yearbook, prom, attendance incentives, and Academic Support class; 
  • Work directly with AmeriCorps Grants Administrator to ensure compliance. 
  • Support staff in the supervision of eight full-time AmeriCorps Members



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; 
  • Minimum of 5 years of school based experience, 3 of which must be working in a similar role; 
  • Ability to motivate staff through effective leadership, mentoring, coaching, development and evaluation; 
  • Ability to work enthusiastically with young people who may be disengaged and have been historically underserved;
  • Strong commitment to helping young adults succeed in reorienting their lives, nurture their leadership skills and enable them to make a difference in their community; 
  • Strong presentation, communication and interpersonal skills; 
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organization skills;
  • Creativity in developing strategies that lead to students’ success.
