The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) is recruiting a Staff Accountant to play a key support role in the day-to-day financial transactions and preparing monthly financial reports. This new position will be the fourth member of our finance team, and we are excited to build capacity for this department to better serve our staff of 65 and more than 22,000 members. 


The Staff Accountant will have flexibility with GFOA’s hybrid work environment, but preference is for the Staff Accountant to be in the Chicago office 2-3 days a week on average. Duties:

General Accounting and Reporting

  • Perform cash reconciliation on a daily basis 
  • Assist with timely completion of day-to-day activities of accounts payable, expense reports, credit card transactions, cash disbursements, invoicing/billing and collections
  • Reconcile and post day-to-day transactions from membership database
  • With Accounting Manager, maintain the general ledger and other accounting records necessary to prepare the monthly financial statements
  • Prepare monthly journal entries
  • Monthly balance sheet and other reconciliations
  • Assist with preparation of monthly financial reports

Audit and Tax Compliance

  • Assist with preparation of annual Forms 1099 and 1096 reports
  • Assist with preparation of quarterly sales tax return
  • Assist with preparation of Forms 990 and 990-T
  • Assist with preparation of audit schedules, annual financial statements and footnotes
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a record of successful financial roles within an organization. As an effective team member, the Staff Accountant will bring a record of success in building relationships and communicating to a variety of constituents. Because the Finance team is small, but mighty, the Staff Accountant will also be willing to wear multiple hats and assist with other duties as assigned.


An undergraduate degree in accounting and 2-3 years of relevant experience is desired. Previous experience in not-for-profit or association environment is preferred, however, candidates with a variety of experiences are encouraged to apply.
