For over 50 years, Legal Aid Chicago has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year our attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Position: Legal Aid Chicago seeks a full-time Intake Attorney for our Client Screening Unit (CSU). This is a non-litigation position that involves provision of legal advice and brief services focused on older adults (age 60+) with some emphasis on housing and consumer issues.  CSU is the central entry point for applicants seeking legal assistance from Legal Aid Chicago. CSU staff screen applicants for eligibility, perform triage of legal issues, and determine the appropriate level of service for clients including referral, advice, or connecting clients to  one of our Practice Groups for more extensive analysis and representation.  



  • Interview clients by telephone to gather facts and analyze their legal issues
  • Review documents and provide legal advice, counseling, and brief services for clients such as drafting letters, contacting third parties to advocate on discrete issues, and conducting brief legal research
  • Provide legal consultation to and review electronic case files of non-attorney Intake Specialists to ensure appropriate and accurate advice is communicated to clients
  • Conduct client registration and screening when additional intake support is needed
  • Maintain knowledge in areas of law handled by Legal Aid Chicago such as family law, housing, employment law, public benefits and consumer law
  • Handle other related assignments as determined by the CSU Director

  • A J.D. degree and licensed to practice law in Illinois or able to waive into the Illinois bar
  • Interest in working with low-income and elderly clients
  • Excellent communication skills, facility with electronic case management systems, ability to process complicated information and to work under pressure
  • Preference for applicants with legal aid or legal hotline experience, especially in housing and/or consumer law, and familiarity with legal practice in the Cook County Court system
  • Spanish fluency is a plus
