Description

The Operations Manager is responsible for directing and supervising the safe operations of labor engaged in loading and unloading ship’s cargo and hazardous materials, while maintaining efficient operations, injury prevention, and cost management. This position is also tasked with ensuring a safe environment to prevent injuries.  Also responsible for maintaining client relationships and optimizing the productivity of the labor.

Requirements
  • Oversees Longshoreman/General Operation/Safety Compliance on various bulk, breakbulk, and cruise operations.
  • Oversees operation set-up.
  • Responsible for pre/post-operation equipment check.
  • Orders labor with possible changes to ensure proper daily staffing.
  • Plans operations with Foreman and Clerks.
  • Inputs/checks labor payrolls to ensure accuracy.
  • Coordinates with Ship Agent/Metro Shore/Terminal Management, if necessary.
  • Builds relationships with clients.
  • Builds positive relations with the union.
  • Addresses client needs quickly and appropriately.
  • Keeps supervisor apprised of noteworthy details of the operations.
  • Orders parts as needed for equipment.
  • Supervises staff at the port, including roles such as: longshoremen, mechanics and checkers.
  • Conducts and/or participates in safety meetings.
  • Able to work weekends and holidays based on operations schedule. 
  • Assists with the needs of the terminal and or ship agent.
  • Ensures office supplies are kept stocked.
  • Addresses or contacts the proper help to troubleshoot minor IT problems.
  • Updates the Vessel Calendar.
  • Ensures the payment of terminal bills monthly.
  • Travel may be required to other ports in the Gulf or West Coast. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

In accordance with applicable policies/procedures and Federal/State laws, may perform the following supervisory responsibilities:  Interviewing, hiring, orienting, coaching and developing employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising, managing and rewarding performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Knowledge/ Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an area of study, such as Communications or Business, preferred, or equivalent of a High School diploma and 2-5+ years of progressively responsible, related experience.
  • Prior experience in inventory control, freight and shipping & computer operating systems.
  • Experience with maritime cargo or cruise industry preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of ILWU/ PMA contract & safety code.
  • Union personnel supervision experience preferred.

Salary Description
Starting Salary: $92,800.00 per year
