Position Overview

The Roofer removes and installs roofing systems, with insulation, flashings, and other work associated with roofs, for the Company. The Roofer works with a diverse group of people and disciplines, both inside and outside the Company. The Roofer works well as a team member and consistently meets deadlines. Usually works on a crew of 4 to 8 workers as the project requires.


The Construction Department performs new construction and reroofing projects, and sheet metal installation fulfilling our contract requirements for our clients. The work is performed by crews of various sizes and composition based on the needs of the project, as determined by the Superintendents and the Construction Manager. Generally, roofing crews are 5-8 workers led by a Crew Foreman. Sheet metal crews are typically 2-3 workers including a Lead Sheet Metal Installer. The Superintendents supervise and coach the Roofing Foremen and Lead Metal Installers. 


The Roofer is responsible for the following essential functions:

  • Climbs ladders, scaffolds, and stairs; rides lifts and other approved equipment to work at heights
  • Proper use of trade-related hand and power tools necessary for the completion of the job
  • Properly uses personal protective equipment (i.e. hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, body harness, etc.)
  • Operation of rooftop equipment under direction of foreman
  • Meets project safety requirements communicated from the Foreman
  • Familiar with safety requirements of the trade
  • Safely performs assigned tasks related to the removal, repair, and/or installation of roofing systems
  • Knowledge of materials used in the trade and able to identify and select appropriate material for the job
  • Performs all tasks related to the removal, repair, and/or installation of roofing systems
  • Maintains and promotes safety awareness and compliance in the workplace and works to minimize hazards
  • Learns new skills, methods and procedures as required to meet the changing demands of the industry
  • Provides instruction and training to less experienced roofers and laborers as needed

Key Activities:

  • Safely operates rooftop equipment (i.e.: roof cutter, spudding machine, tear-off machine, etc.) as directed by foreman.
  • Safely performs all tasks related to the removal, repair, and/or installation of roofing systems, including:
  • Laying out tapered insulation systems and adhering/fastening them in place
  • Applying various adhesives, such as hot asphalt, solvent-based adhesives, urethane adhesives, modified asphalt adhesives, etc.
  • Preparing old roofs for proper tie-in to a new roof or repair
  • Adhering or fastening roof membrane systems, such as EPDM, Thermoplastic, Modified Asphalt, and Built-Up Roof Systems
  • Flashing curbs, walls, pipes, eaves, drains, and other roof perimeters and penetrations, according to specified details.
  • Installing sheet metal components such as edge metal, counterflashing, coping, “pitch pans”, etc.
  • Properly uses Personal Protective Equipment (i.e. hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, body harness, etc.)
  • Knows and follows safety requirements of the trade
  • Proficient with tools of the trade
  • Familiar with materials used in the trade and able to identify and select appropriate material for the job at hand
  • Demonstrates daily a willingness to meet the requirements of this position
  • Provides instruction to less experienced co-workers as directed by the Foreman
  • Daily assists the Foreman in maintaining a positive and safe work environment and in coordinating the efforts of other crew members


Salary Description
$20 - $28 / HR
