In 1990, a small group of dedicated volunteers with a desire to eliminate substandard housing in our community founded San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity.  Thanks to our supporters, more than 200 local and international families have been able to build or repair their own homes here in Los Angeles’ San Gabriel Valley and beyond. Through the years, we have maintained our unrelenting determination to help families in need by offering a hand up, not a handout.


Through donations, shopping at our ReStores, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. 


Job Summary

 The Construction Site Supervisor is responsibilities are including but not limited to planning and leading the construction of new homes, acquisition rehabs, and accessory dwelling units in San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity’s service area. All projects will include skilled and unskilled volunteers, so critical responsibility of this position is the ability and willingness to lead and train our teams for success. 


Reporting Relationships and Organizational Impact

  • Upward Reporting Relationship: Positions Reports to: Project Manager
  • Manager: Oversees construction crew members and volunteers on the job site
  • Internal and External:  Has regular contact with departments, employees and Managers at all levels of the internal organization as well as with external organizations, volunteers, donors, vendors, and subcontractors. 
  • Influence:  May influence the formulation of organizational policy, contractual obligations and employee morale

Essential Job Duties

  

  

  • Oversees all aspects of the construction and repair of new and existing homes with supervision and leadership from the Project Manager.
  • Daily hands on tasks can include but are not limited to… Framing, roofing, window and door installation, finish carpentry, flooring, drywall, basic plumbing and electrical, siding installation, painting and other trades required to build and/or repair homes.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and direction to staff and volunteers who have come to work on the construction site.
  • Coordinates with Project Manager in planning work and specific tasks.
  • Assists in the ordering and inventorying of building materials and tools.
  • Conducts safety briefing and task instruction for all staff and volunteers prior to beginning construction on the work site. Monitors jobsite throughout the day and ensures all safety protocols are adhered to. 
  • Assists in loading and unloading of building materials and tools on site and into the warehouse.
  • Attends all needed SGVHFH trainings and scheduled activities.
  • Ensures that all SGVH and HFHI covenants and policies are followed at construction sites.
  • Assists in other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understand Habitat for Humanity’s philosophy with a desire to promote the mission.
  • Comprehensive construction knowledge with an understanding of the principles, operations, and management of construction.
  • Experience in or willingness to learn how to manage, train, and motivate volunteers.
  • Previous remodeling experience preferred. 
  • Moderate computer and software skills including but not limited to internet, Outlook email, Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Proficient in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to understand and relate to diverse populations including those suffering economic hardships.
  • Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with staff, business and community leaders, building officials, contractors, vendors, donors, homeowners and volunteers.
  • Must provide excellent customer service, including managing difficult or emotional situations, responding promptly to customer needs, soliciting customer feedback to improve service and meeting commitments.
  • Leadership qualities that promote teamwork are necessary to balance team and individual responsibilities.

Additional Requirements

  • Three or more years’ knowledge and experience in residential construction required
  • Prior Habitat for Humanity construction experience a plus
  • Experience working with volunteers or social services a plus
  • California General Contractor License not required, but a plus
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and clean driving record is mandatory
  • Must be able to work Tuesday – Saturday

Working Conditions

Fast-paced construction environment. Tasks have fixed deadlines. The work environment may include daily exposure to dirt, dust, dampness, construction debris, extreme temperatures, construction noises, fumes and odors from construction materials. Individual may regularly withstand hot and cold weather conditions to perform outdoor responsibilities. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. Requires standing for extended periods of time, visual acumen, and physical dexterity.
