THIS POSITION IS FOR NIGHT SHIFT
Sand blasters are responsible for sand blasting steel to remove scale prior to being galvanized. Material on the surface that cannot be removed in the chemical cleaning process must be removed mechanically by sand blasting. Scale removal is key to proper galvanizing; sand blasters must execute their duties safely, efficiently, and with proper technique to ensure quality galvanized coatings.
Duties
Sand blasting is an important step in the galvanizing process – attention to detail and good technique are required to achieve appropriate scale removal. Sand blasters duties include:
· Assessing material to be blasted – take direction from supervisor on areas that may or may not need to be blasted
· Using and inspecting specialized respirators – knowledge of proper working condition of personal protective equipment is required
· Blasting material per supervisor instructions – understand how the blasting equipment works and be familiar with operating conditions in order to recognize/report issues
· Move or turn material manually or with the use of equipment to ensure complete sand blasting
· Clean blasting media from material before it leaves the area
· Clean the sand blasting room throughout the day
· Become certified to operate overhead cranes
Physical and Environmental Considerations
Work is completed in an enclosed sand blast building, and frequent lifting is required – sand blasters must have the physical ability required to complete tasks in a timely manner. Aspects of physical and environmental conditions sand blasters must consider include the following:
· Holding and maneuvering the 125-psi sand blast hose
· Moving, flipping, or rotating material manually
· Completing blasting duties while wearing a supplied air respirator hood
· Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling
· Blast media being projected while scale simultaneously being removed – these particles are airborne while blasting
· Constant material handling
· Repetitive hand motions
· Seasonal outdoor temperatures – shade, drinking water, shelter during rain storms provided
