Position: Facilities Maintenance Worker II Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Facilities Maintenance Supervisor Location: San Bernardino International Airport

Salary Range: $22.70 - $27.10 an hour with full benefits

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of routine to complex work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of agency infrastructure, facilities, and related installations, including Airport Operations Area (AOA), high-voltage electrical systems, airport hangars, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, elevators and escalators, automatic/overhead doors, and baggage conveyor systems, fire suppression systems, water distribution systems, plant installation and erosion control; performs carpentry, painting, carpeting, tiling, electrical repairs and other building maintenance functions; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power driven equipment; and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May provide technical and functional direction to less experienced staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth. 

• Inspects assigned agency infrastructure for safety issues, structural integrity, and possible future work projects and programs, and appropriately marks areas that need to be repaired.
• Performs maintenance, modification, and repair on airport buildings and facilities and related structures and appurtenances, including Airport Operations Area (AOA), high-voltage electrical systems such as airfield lighting systems, airport hangars, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, elevators and escalators, automatic/overhead doors, and baggage conveyor systems, fire suppression systems, water distribution systems, plant installation and erosion control; inspects and repairs generator systems. 
• Tests machinery and equipment; checks machines for unusual sounds, leaks, or other malfunctions and discusses machine operation variations with supervisor or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine; dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts; cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery; maintains HVAC and plumbing systems, and related equipment and structures.  
• Performs industrial cleaning and shop keeping duties, light carpentry, paining, electrical and other facility maintenance tasks, as required.
• Sets up and operates machine tools such as grinders, drills, power saws, planers, plumbing apparatus, and various hand tools in accordance with safety rules and accepted operating practices; inspects tools and equipment on regular basis to ensure operational safety; attends various training sessions to acquire the skills necessary to operate all types of tools and equipment used.
• Fabricates and repairs counters, benches, partitions, and other wooden structures.
• Uses power and hand tools to perform construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment. 
• Reads plans and performs work for new construction and/or remodeling projects including electrical, gas, and mechanical systems; plumbing; roofing; and painting. 
• Operates and maintains specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of facilities.
• Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
• Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
• Installs street barricades and cones and controls traffic around work sites and special events to ensure safe conditions for the general public and agency workers.
• Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
• Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
• Responds to after-hours emergencies.
• May provide temporary supervision of Work Release Personnel.
• Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the. public, vendors, contractors, and agency staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned. 

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and three (3) years of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or repair of facilities, systems, and appurtenances, or two (2) years of experience equivalent to Facilities Maintenance Worker I at the agency. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
• Successfully complete background check to obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.
• Completion of a 10-panel drug screen for all substances deemed illegal by the Federal Government  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various agency sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
