CCLS Director of Pro Bono & Strategic Partnerships



For over 50 years, CCLS has represented and advocated for low-income individuals in Merced, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Fresno, Tulare, and Kings Counties. With more than 90 employees, our mission is to provide high quality, no-cost civil legal services to low income individuals, families, and communities—improving the wellbeing of our Valley through systems-changing advocacy, client education, and legal work that meets individual clients’ immediate needs. We also work closely with agencies and community organizations that share our commitment to support our clients in being their own agents of change. 


The Director of Pro Bono and Strategic Partnerships is responsible for managing CCLS’ three-person Pro Bono Program which increases access to justice by leveraging the skills and expertise of program staff and pro bono volunteers. The Director will work with program staff to design, implement, and manage programs that utilize pro bono attorneys and professionals. The Director will develop and maintain relationships with law firms, in-house legal departments, bar associations and the judiciary, and coordinate pro bono opportunities with program staff and external partners. The Director will be responsible for recruiting, coordinating, training, placing pro bono matters, and supervising external volunteers. The Director will also be responsible for recruiting “in house” volunteers with CCLS’ programs, including summer interns, and recruiting law fellows to the organization. The Director will report to the Executive Director and serve on the management team, supporting the long- term vision, goals, and operations of the organization. 




  • In partnership with the Executive Director and Management Team, create and implement long term, strategic vision for CCLS’ pro bono and volunteer programs.
  • Lead development, management, and administration of overall Pro Bono Program and individual pro bono projects, from limited scope clinics to co-counseling on impact litigation.
  • Work with CCLS program staff to develop and coordinate training programs for volunteers.
  • Work with Pro Bono Program staff and the Development Team to develop training and marketing materials for the pro bono program.
  • Place pro bono matters with attorney and volunteers.
  • Serve as resource to staff on pro bono-related issues, including the tracking of pro bono matters, helping resolve placement issues, and securing updates regarding case placements.
  • Collect and maintain all data related to volunteer involvement and activities, and responsible for report development and submission.
  • Serve as primary liaison with the legal community on pro bono matters.
  • Supervise the Pro Bono Program support staff.
  • Collaborate with CCLS’ Development Team on volunteer cultivation efforts, including the organizing of volunteer recognition events, fundraising campaigns, and play a key role in CCLS events.
  • Partner with the Development Team on grant proposals and reports.
  • Represent CCLS in the community, including participation in relevant committees, task forces, and working groups. 
  • Oversee in-house volunteer programs, such as the summer internship program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 


  • Active member in good standing of the State Bar of California (required); 
  • Minimum five years of legal experience (required);
  • Minimum three years of management experience (required); 
  • Public interest experience either through employment at a non-profit legal services organization or through demonstrated commitment to pro bono endeavors while in private practice (preferred); 
  • Experience working with volunteers, preferably volunteers through pro bono initiatives (preferred);
  • Collaborative, team-oriented individual able to work with colleagues and external partners (required);
  • Ability to train, mentor, and motivate others (required);
  • Proven organizational, leadership, and management skills (required); 
  • Commitment to CCLS’ mission and core values (required);

  • Ability to travel as needed, proof of liability and property insurance on vehicle used.


Please note that CCLS currently requires all staff to be fully vaccinated and to have at least one booster (if eligible). Medical and religious exemptions to this requirement are also available.

$101,580 - $109,332 per year
