JOB SUMMARY 

  

This role will be responsible for the overall effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity of ADG’s Transportation and Logistics spend, including import, domestic inbound and outbound transportation from third-party carriers, and fleet management. In partnership with the SVP Category Management, the Supply Chain Services Leadership Team, and Division purchasing and operations management teams, and external partners, this role will be responsible for simultaneously driving sustainable reduction in total supply chain operating costs, while continuing to enable the high levels of entrepreneurial spirit and excellent customer service for which ADG is known. 


This role will be responsible for accomplishing these objectives through participation in the joint development and execution of ADG’s nationwide Distribution network and Warehouse operations strategies, proactively assisting with the evaluation and implementation of logistics/fleet cost reduction opportunities and leading the negotiation of all national and regional transportation contracts—including but not limited to Import, Domestic Rail, and Domestic LTL/FTL contracts. Establishing effective working relationships with local and regional operations teams is a critical key success factor to ensure alignment and the full realization of the benefits from identified opportunities and improvement initiatives.

This leader will drive a culture of continuous improvement, will be dynamic and innovative, and one who deploys an energetic day-to-day “roll-up-your-sleeves” attitude.


The breadth of this role requires the ability to both execute on the Supply Chain Services team’s overall strategy while also ensuring that the day-to-day organization is constantly operating in its most efficient form. A rigorous data-driven mentality is a must, and this person needs to have the analytical and quantitative skills necessary to use data to back up forecasts, assumptions, and strategic initiatives. Equally important are communications and change management skills to influence and lead a highly diverse, geographically dispersed group of warehouse operations personnel reporting to the division management organizations.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Leadership

  • Assist the Chief Supply Chain Officer and Senior Leadership Team to optimize ADG’s end-to-end supply chain to create a competitive advantage by providing world class strategies, structure, facilities, processes, policies, disciplined execution capabilities, standards of excellence, and talent which deliver superior value to our customers and shareholders.
  • Establish key goals and set KPIs for Transportation and Logistics.
  • Provide strong on-going leadership to drive company-wide adoption of best practices concepts, tactics and processes.
  • Effectively communicate strategies, results, and metrics to company-wide leadership teams as required.
  • Develop a team of Transportation and Logistics specialists through effective management, leadership, training and coaching. Drive culture change and an environment of accountability and continuous improvement. 
  • Enable division business leaders to supplement the workforce, scale business operations, deliver operating efficiencies, and better serve our partners.
  • Develop logistics management assessment processes and talent development programs to build capabilities and deliver on performance expectations.
  • Conduct the performance management process, identify training and development needs, and establish performance standards for both direct reports and the extended Transportation and Logistics team.

Transportation & Logistics

  • Assist in the development of ADG’s long-term Distribution Network Strategy and Warehouse Operations model, ensuring the Company fully leverages both Supplier and Third-Party Logistics (3PL) partnerships.
  • Build short term/long term strategic vision for all aspects of transportation and logistics, aligned with ADG strategies and Annual Operating Plans.
  • Provide direction and expertise in continually optimizing ADG’s fleet in terms of total Capital Expenditure (CapEx) requirements, leasing costs, maintenance and ongoing operating costs.
  • Partner with the Senior Director EHS to create a safety-first culture by ensuring DOT compliance, on-going driver training and by closely partnering with operational leadership within our facilities.
  • Create standard operating procedures and best practices in terms of performance monitoring to optimize logistics quality, cost and delivery time.
  • Work closely with our supply chain and division teams to ensure all products are transported efficiently and cost-effectively from our suppliers, fabrication facilities and distribution centers.
  • Provide expertise and oversight to optimize inbound and outbound carrier operations and supplier base to meet capacity, service and least-cost objectives.
  • Lead all carrier pricing negotiations and contract management efforts.
  • Provide all transportation analysis relating to pricing and service levels.
  • Establish and utilize KPIs that drive competitive costs and service.
  • Analyze and assess industry and market dynamics on a regular basis to evaluate transportation costs and service trends.
  • Ensure successful regional and division adoption and capability development across all our markets.
  • Oversee all aspects of customs compliance and leverage of Incoterms.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company guidelines, policies and procedures, and applicable laws.  Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Supervise a team of Transportation and Logistics specialists.


Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Supply Chain, Business, Logistics, Industrial Distribution, or related field.
  • 15+ years related experience, with 5+ years of Transportation and Logistics leadership roles, in private and/or public companies, ideally in the building products and distribution space at companies with over $1 billion in revenue.
  • Demonstrated success leading strategic transportation planning, driving improvement in service levels, end-to-end supply chain optimization, reliable and sustainable operations and driving P&L performance.
  • Possess expertise and demonstrated functional knowledge in managing all aspects of transportation and logistics.
  • Experience with 3rd party providers and company owned logistics network.
  • Must have a proven track record of leading direct and/or indirect associates distributed across many locations.
  • Expert knowledge of domestic and import logistics with a sense of urgency critical to on time delivery.
  • Possess negotiating, strategic and tactical transportation, planning, warehousing and logistics, problem analysis, and creativity skills.
  • Experience in successfully implementing new and complex solutions for Transportation and Logistics.
  • Industry-standard ERP knowledge and experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS).
  • Ability to leverage analytics to optimize for cost and service and leveraging data-driven decision-making to deliver meaningful results that align with the overall transportation and warehousing strategy.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills with an ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional teams and deliver complex strategic initiatives, in a truly fluid, interactive environment.
  • Proven financial and business acumen and capability in negotiation, change management and stakeholder management.
  • Travel will be required for this role.
