Frank Lloyd Wright established the Taliesin Fellowship in 1932 to provide a total learning environment that would foster responsible, creative, and cultured human beings. Apprentices, as members of the Fellowship were called, gained experience not only in architecture but also in construction, farming, gardening, and cooking, and the study of nature, music, art, and dance. From its origins Taliesin has served as a living, working, educational space, forming a creative and diverse community of professional architects, artists, faculty, students, and staff.
Under the mentorship of the Cook/Kitchen Manager, the Taliesin West Culinary/Kitchen Assistants will participate in Monday-Saturday meal planning and preparation for students, faculty, and guests of the School of Architecture at Taliesin; staff of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation; and the community of Taliesin Legacy Fellowship residents. Once a month on Saturdays, the Assistants will also will also support special events that are arranged by the School staff. In all assignments, the Assistants help plan and prepare fresh meals based on seasonality and local availability alongside the School’s students while working and learning at a one-of-a-kind non-profit educational organization and playing an active role in a dynamic and vibrant community. There are two Culinary/Kitchen Assistant positions which are part-time seasonal and non-exempt (hourly) roles that run mid-October through mid-May.
• Works with the Cook/Kitchen Manager to plan lunch and dinner menus with consideration for anticipated guests, dietary restrictions, popularity of various dishes, budgetary factors and the goal of creating zero waste. Menu items may include but are not limited to soups, salads, sandwiches, hot entrees, vegetable dishes, side dishes, dressings and sauces.
• Helps prepare lunch to be served at 12:30 p.m. and dinner to be served at 6:30 p.m. Meals are served Monday through Saturday and shifts will vary in order to support meal service on those days.
• Works alongside students engaged in assisting in the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals.
• Helps maintain clean and orderly kitchen and kitchen equipment and ensure that required sanitary levels are maintained throughout preparation, serving, and storing process.
• Assists the Cook/Kitchen Manager with special events including Taliesin Evenings.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Appropriate combination of education and experience in culinary technique and food preparation; experience working in a commercial kitchen, in self-serve, community kitchen or in catering preferred.
• Ability to effectively communicate using various methods as appropriate for the needs of the audience and talk to others to convey information effectively.
• Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
• Proven flexibility and efficient time management and ability to prioritize work while meeting productivity standards.
