Job Purpose

Straughan Environmental, Inc. is seeking to add a qualified Senior Accountant to our growing team. The candidate will demonstrate experience with full-cycle accounting and monthly closing procedures, preparation of financial statements, A/P and A/R, payroll functions, and audit support. The position will play an essential role in supporting the Director of Finance in preparing both internal as well as external financial reports, supporting various types of audits and ensuring accuracy of the day to day accounting functions. The candidate may be required to work additional hours as necessary to meet critical deadlines and certain times during the year.


Duties & Responsibilities

Maintain accounts payable

  • Review account coding for accuracy
  • Enter vouchers into Unanet system
  • Reconcile credit card transactions and expense report submission
  • Maintain accurate account coding and A/P Aging report
  • Adhere to bi-weekly A/P check run schedule

Maintain accounts receivable 

  • Enter Deposits via electronic banking system
  • Maintain accurate A/R Aging report
  • Prepare monthly collections report
  • Support collections activities as needed

 Assist with billing support activities 

  • Assist with timesheet corrections
  • Assist with cost structure corrections
  • Assist with the review of direct and indirect labor
  • Review expense reports for accurate expense type and project codes

Maintain project setup in Unanet

  • Setup of new projects in Unanet from information received from contracts
  • Coordinate all project setups with the Accounting Controller
  • Ensure all information from the project setup for is accurate and in accordance with the contract
  • Enter all the information including contract limitations, billing instructions and people assignments

 Prepare various month-end project accounting reports

  • Evaluation of project burn-rates
  • Assist with preparation of monthly project management report list
  • Assist with the maintenance of various job status reports
  • Ability to discuss project financials with Project Managers
  • Ability to answer questions and respond to various requests from Project Managers

 Bi-Weekly Payroll

  • Bii-weekly payroll journal and ap entries
  • Reconcile payroll accrual and expense accounts 
  • State Tax and UI are accurately being processed by Paylocity
  • HSA, FSA, 401K are being funded as required
  • Accruals for new hires, terminations and LWOP personnel are updated in Unanet
  • Ability to answer questions and respond to various request

Month-end closing procedures

  • Complete account analysis schedules
  • Review & evaluate T/B for accuracy
  • Prepare monthly accrual schedule and J/E
  • Review trend income statement and evaluate for accuracy
  • Perform account reconciliations
  • Update financial dashboard reports 
  • Update budget vs. actual reports 

Quarterly reports and reconciliations 

  • 941 Quarterly reconciliations 
  • GSA reporting 
  • MD Sales and Use Tax

Assist with external audits 

  • Workers Comp 
  • 401 audits
  • Finacial statement review 
  • Overhead rate and ICS audits 


Requirements

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional accounting experience. 
  • Strong understanding of GAAP
  • Familiarity with State and/or Federal Government contracting. 
  • Experience with job cost accounting
  • Experience with cost-plus, time and materials, and fixed-price contracts 
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is essential 
  • Ability to communicate across various functional levels of the organization
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently 
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Able to handle confidential material
  • Ability to prioritize and organize efficiently
  • Ability to meet deadlines. 
  • High-level analytical ability
  • Effective written and verbal communication 


Desired Qualifications

  • CPA candidate
  • Hands on experience with Unanet ERP system highly desirable
  • Strong computer aptitude
  • Understanding of FAR/DFAR
