Description

MASS MoCA’s Performing Arts Department seeks to grow its pool of skilled on-call/temporary Stagehands and Production Assistants to support performances and events throughout the museum. The On-Call/Temporary Production Assistant/ Stage Hand is a temporary hourly position that will work alongside the full time production staff to supplement the team’s needs. The schedule is project specific, with time frames ranging from 1-2 days or longer for specific projects. 


Production Assistant/Stagehands assist in: general stagecraft, load in and load out, as well as more specific skilled tasks associated with staging, audio, electrics and video/projection as assigned by the Production Manager and Assistant Production Manager. 


The ideal candidate will have some prior knowledge of stagecraft, be a team player who will work to achieve deadlines collaboratively.

  • Excellent work ethic, craftsmanship, practical problem-solving, creative thinking, embracing collaborative practice, and understanding of team spirit 
  • The ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, collaborators, and artists 
  • A high level of professional consideration when interacting with visiting artists and staff
  • The position requires general knowledge and interest of stagecraft 
  • Preferred candidates will  have a general working knowledge of lighting, audio and video
  • Must have a valid driver’s license (if needed) and may be asked to drive, load/unload and pack various straight trucks from 16 to 40ft.
  • Certain positions may require that the candidate be able to safely operate, Genie, Condor and Scissor lifts.
  • The most competitive candidate will have experience working with artists to realize their vision. 

Work Conditions 

  • Some duties of this position require being able to work outside, potentially in inclement weather for extended periods of time
  • This position requires ability to work a flexible schedule, with availability on weekends, evenings and holidays, for events, programs, and festivals, including those after museum hours
  • This position may require work in dimly lit areas, and/or may be subject to strobe lights or other photo sensitive situations
  • The majority of the workday is spent indoors, but some events and/or festivals require working outdoors and in inclement weather

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit for extended periods of time with limited breaks
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arm, and reach above shoulder height
  • The employee is regularly required to climb or balance, squat, kneel, and crouch. 
  • The employee must regularly be able to lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds and move heavy objects as required.
  • Ability to climb ladders and operate mechanical lifts and power tools
  • Ability, mobility, and license to drive a motor vehicle
  • Acute vision, hearing, voice, smell, and sense of touch
  • Employee is required to move about their work area, between buildings and the campus grounds, ascend and descend stairs
  • Must be able to wear PPE when necessary
