Position Summary:

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing support to the Clinical Nurse Coordinator, supporting the nursing staff, while advocating and providing direct care for the people we serve. Responsibilities include educating staff and clients, chart audits, answering phones, making appointments, ensuring confidentiality, encouraging a positive environment, and enhancing positive workflow.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, and other prescribers with medication clinics as needed
  • Gather information regarding prescribed psychotropic medications according to symptoms, level of distress, and observed side effects
  • Communicate information gathered with psychiatrist / prescriber / or other relevant party, complete clinical and non-clinical documentation as required in established system 
  • Act as a liaison between psychiatrist/pharmacist/the people we serve
  • Act as a liaison between referral sources and other RMHC staff
  • Responsible to facilitate a program for the administration of medications to the people we serve so that their needs for therapeutic dosages of medications are met, and the facility is in compliance with state regulations for handling of medications. 
  • Assess and respond appropriately to the needs of the people we serve
  • Monitor the system of medication distribution
  • Consult with supervisors and medical professionals as needed     
  • Prepare and distribute medication for distribution to the people we serve
  • Train staff to appropriately distribute medication, to identify side effects of medication, and to follow best practices and standards 
  • Secure all medications 
  • Maintain supplies
  • Record all needed information into the electronic health record and other mandated logs such as MARS
  • Keep medication labels current
  • Monitor medication distribution daily                                                 
  • Supervise all other staff distributing medication            
  • Conduct in-service on medications at least annually
  • Ensure medication program meets health department regulations and notify supervisor of potential deficiencies


  • Responsible to administer resident health care plans so that resident health care needs are met on a regular basis via review of medical histories, evaluation of residents, assist resident with scheduling of appointments, correspond with other health care professionals, participate in medical consults, psych reviews, and perform prescribed treatments                         
  • Responsible to provide the people we serve with information about medications and side effects so that they become more aware of benefits, side effects, and uses of medications:
  • Educate the people we serve                           
  • Arrange individual sessions                           
  • Hold Medication Education Group one time per week
  • Disseminate information              
  • Initiate participation from the people we serve
  • Implement and track self-medication program
  • Provide everyone with at least two opportunities per week (one individual, one group) to learn about medications and side effects.  


  • Responsible to provide direct service to mentally ill adults so that their residential treatment needs are met:            
  • Conduct activities                  
  • Monitor behavior                               
  • Role model appropriate behavior                 
  • Provide transportation                 
  • Assess individual needs
  • Participate in individual and group contact
  • Stimulate interest
  • Record participation and progress
  • Monitor TDA’s schedule every 6 months.  
  • Record all significant contact with the people we serve in the individual files.


  • Responsible to provide crisis management services so that needs are met and so that other staff receive support and assistance:
  • Assume responsibility in crisis situations
  • Assess needs of the people we serve
  • Consult with supervisors
  • Following Established procedures
  • Report to other community / governmental agencies as required
  • Record crises situations in files
  • Respond to crisis situations immediately if in building / within one hour on call.
  • Record all instances where crisis management techniques are used


  • Responsible to communicate with staff and other professionals so that the effectiveness of services provided to the people we serve are enhanced:     
  • Attend staff and treatment team meetings              
  • Consult with other staff                       
  • Attend training sessions as assigned by supervisor
  • Report significant events at each shift change
  • Attend at least 16 hours of training per year in areas specified by IRT and CS rules.
  • Provide education / training to other RMHC locations when approved by the Program Manager

  • Ability to work all shifts in the 24-hour programs and be cross trained in other departments to meet the needs of the agency and the people we serve.

Education and Experience:

  • Licensed by State of Minnesota as a Registered Nurse is required
  • Bachelor’s degree with 2000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of adult mental health services is preferred

Physical Requirements: 

  • 18 years of age
  • Able to sit and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to physically provide medical procedures, including injections
  • Vision sufficient to utilize a computer monitor, monitor the people we serve and visitors and identify, measure, and dispense medications
  • Hearing sufficient to communicate via telephone or in person either one on one or in a group setting
  • Able to articulate the English language in a manner that is sufficiently clear as to be easily understood
  • Maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness and physical appearance
