Cashier

Salary & Benefits: $15.25/hr., 20% store discount, accrued Paid Time Off

Hours: Part-time

Job Summary: Cashiers hold the most externally facing position at the Co-op. They are expected to demonstrate a visibly welcoming disposition and be customer-focused, helpful, and energetic. Cashiers are responsible for independently ringing up all standard customer transactions. Cashiers are also responsible for communicating information about the co-op’s products and persuasively talking with shoppers about how to join the co-op. Cashiers report directly to the Front End Manager and receive direction from Shift Leads as well.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Greet members and shoppers
• Process customer transactions involving accurate use of the POS system, and accurate cash handling
• Respond to questions about the co-op and products; refer members and shoppers to appropriate staff; assist with shopping needs
• Work collaboratively within and provide support to a team of cashiers
• Gain familiarity with Mariposa policies, processes/procedures and organizational bylaws
• Keep front of store and register areas clean and organized
• Uphold Mariposa’s Loss Prevention Policies & Practices
• Stay active during shifts by helping to stock and face products during slow times
• Receive and process packages delivered to the front of the store
• Learn and communicate about food co-operatives and other co-operative business models
• Hold self and co-workers accountable to Mariposa’s mission and values

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• 1+ years using a POS system and performing cash & credit transactions
• 1+ years in a retail setting, preferably in a grocery setting
• 1+ years in a customer service position
• Experience working or living in diverse communities
• Basic knowledge of produce and natural foods
• Demonstrated commitment to food justice a plus!
• Familiarity or experience with co-operative business models is a plus! 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Standing and walking short distances for up to 8 hours 
• Climb 1-2 flights of stairs a few times per day
• Ability to wear a face mask for 7+ hours per day
• Lift 10-20 lbs as needed
• Work in a fast-paced well-lit environment 
• Engage in short conversations repeatedly for an extended period of time
• Continuous use of arms and hands to repeatedly scan light-weight items
• Fine motor skills needed to count cash and change, and to operate POS system
• Ability to look at a POS screen for extended periods of time to read and ensure proper transactions
• Ability to wear a mask for several hours.
