Nestled in 25 acres of beautiful gardens, Philbrook Museum of Art is a 1920s Italianate Villa featuring a dynamic and ambitious program of rotating exhibitions and galleries with selections from an actively growing collection of approximately 16,000 objects. With artworks from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe dating from 3,000 BCE to today, Philbrook is Oklahoma’s most comprehensive art museum and offers visitors a glimpse into a broad range of cultures, time periods, and perspectives. Philbrook Museum of Art is seeking a pool of careful, conscientious, and hard-working Temporary Art Handlers for periodic employment assisting with exhibitions, installations, and gallery rotations.


Essential Job Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Packing, unpacking, moving, and installing artwork
  • Hanging wall graphics, signage, and labels
  • Installing interpretive components
  • Matting, framing, mounting, storing, and caring for artworks
  • Assisting with fabrication of pedestals, plinths, boxes, walls, mounts, and other items
  • Building walls, painting, wall patching
  • Lighting galleries and changing lights
  • Cleaning gallery and shop areas
  • Performing general repairs
  • Construction, carpentry, painting, and using wood shop tools
  • Metalsmithing
  • Rigging or moving heavy objects


Qualifications:

Team members must be collaborative, reliable, and safety focused. Must follow policies related to art handling as well as proper use and care of tools and equipment and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

The ideal candidates must have prior experience handling art in a museum or gallery setting, an aptitude for learning and problem solving, and the ability to handle constantly shifting priorities.

  • Excellent manual dexterity
  • Attentive to detail
  • Able to safely lift at least fifty pounds, with frequent bending, kneeling, twisting, crouching, and standing
  • General mobility throughout the museum grounds
  • Comfortable working at elevated heights when required
  • Able to listen to and follow verbal directions
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Hours

Short-term assignments may be full or part-time and last for periods ranging from a half day to several weeks.

Typical hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, with occasional weekend and evening hours as needed. Projects are generally scheduled one month in advance although some exceptions may occur.

This position is filled as needed throughout the year.
