Position Description Summary:
The Aviation Planner provides support to the project manager or project coordinator to fulfill client needs. Responsible for the completion of assigned project work by effectively completing and/or collaborating with others to complete assigned project tasks. Coordinates project work and status while managing the work efforts of Project Analysts and/or other support staff, when needed.
Education / Technical / Experience:
Four-year college degree required. A degree in aviation management, urban planning, architecture, engineering, quantitative analysis, math, computer sciences, graphics, computer-aided design, or public administration is desirable. A master's degree is a plus. A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is required.
Essential Function(s) of the Position:
Project Management
- Develop a scope of work based on client needs (including a detailed breakdown of tasks, hours needed to complete with an associated schedule/fee).
- When fee negotiations dictate cutbacks, manage or modify the scope of work to align with the reduction, and manage the client’s expectations around the changes and what they mean.
- Manage the work efforts of team members to complete elements of the scope of work. Team members could include subconsultants, junior J|D associates and senior J|D associates.
- Manage projects to the agreed upon timeframes and budget.
- Maintains day-to-day primary contact with appropriate client contacts.
- Responsible for developing all work products required for a project, which may include written reports, plans, drawings, presentation items and other materials.
- Prepare and review data, information received and deliverables with attention to detail to identify gaps and alignment with scoped requirements.
- Ability to identify problems that may develop during a project as early as possible and work to resolve any issues as expediently as possible.
Supervisory Support
- Provide training and mentoring to junior staff members. This could include formal training on a specific topic or skill and could be more general on-the-job training and mentoring, which may be of a technical nature or could focus on other key professional skills required for success.
- Provide critical feedback to junior staff on an as needed basis. Have a full understanding that critical feedback is given as a means to maximize the value or our associates to our clients. Staff should be made aware of skills and behaviors that are valuable to our clients as well as those that are not. Feedback should always be given in a neutral and fair environment and the dialogue should be conducted in a professional manner.
- Participate in the annual review cycle and any interim updates deemed necessary.
Communication
- Senior Consultant shall be fully capable of leading meetings and corporate presentations to all levels of stakeholders (internal and external) and clients.
- Be fully familiar with the J|D style guidelines and be able to write or direct the writing efforts for all deliverables included in any scope of work.
- Be fully capable of leading teams, internal or external, through visioning, stakeholder assessment exercises and strategy development exercises.
- Possess a thorough understanding of all aspects of work-oriented tasks and be able to delegate tasks to capable junior staff as much as possible to maximize both the project managers effectiveness and ability to manage multiple projects and to grow the professional capabilities of the junior staff.
Business Development
- Be fully capable of identifying follow on work opportunities with existing clients and continuously looking for opportunities for J|D to expand business opportunities while continuing to provide excellent customer service to our existing clients.
- Begin to establish a focus on (a) specific area(s) that J|D holds core to the strategic suite of services that J|D provides or would like to provide its clients.
- Expect to receive mentoring and coaching, from more senior staff, on the nuances and complexities of selling work in the environment which the firm exists.
- Responsible for identifying opportunities to sell work and recognizing bona fide leads and passing them to management for further vetting, intelligence gathering and follow up.
- Should be adept at growing and maintaining a body of contacts through which future work can be developed.
Technical Skills
- Apply proficiency in use of Excel for higher level data analysis. This includes handling, sorting, and formatting data, using advanced functions and charting, creating pivot tables and using macros and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
- Be fully capable of preparing PowerPoint presentations including use of drawing tools, animations, formatting and using advanced tools.
- Show an understanding of the airport environment, gained through experience in planning, design, management, or construction.
- Be fully capable of using critical thinking skills to break down problems into discrete elements to be addressed, identifying approaches to resolution.
- Should have familiarity with AutoCAD to be able to view files and do basic or more advanced manipulations and drawing.
- Exhibit a desire to learn and apply new technical skills to advance overall proficiency.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit for long periods of time, bend, use hands to manipulate (type), talk and hear; walk; sit, and lift or move no more than ten (10) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral visions, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information, and documents; analyze and solve problems, use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with occasional interruptions, and interact frequently with staff and other organizations.
Working Conditions:
This is a full-time position, with an expectation of 40 hours of work per week – periodic weekend or evening work may be required. Work is performed at the client site or remotely. Occasional travel to work sites is expected (estimated to be 10% travel).
Reporting Relationships:
This position reports to a Managing Consultant, Director, Vice President, or other management staff identified during the hiring process or annual review process.
