Job Purpose

We are looking for an experienced Senior GIS Analyst with experience designing, developing, and implementing databases and workflows to access and store geospatial data across a variety of disciplines such as natural resources, water resources engineering, environmental planning, and asset management. They analyze and present data utilizing Esri GIS software supplemented with Python scripting, Arcade, SQL expressions, and other tools. Senior GIS analysts are adept at using spatial and non-spatial data to solve challenges and develop workflows and methodologies. A senior GIS analyst will lead project teams, collaborate with clients, and provide mentoring to junior staff. 


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Compiles, manipulates, and analyzes geospatial data in support of clients and staff including engineers, environmental scientists, and planners. 
  • Analyzes technical problems and devises new approaches and alternate solutions.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains databases and systems of GIS data. 
  • Creates reports, maps, applications, and visualizations conveying the results of spatial analysis. 
  • Develops or maintains GIS applications using a combination of GIS software, web-based development tools, and/or Windows development tools.
  • Utilizes scripting languages to refine GIS data pipelines and processes. 
  • Develops and documents project workflows. 
  • Develops and supports fieldwork methodologies using mobile data collection tools and applications such as Field Maps for ArcGIS and Survey123 for ArcGIS.
  • Manages project tasks by scheduling work activities, coordinates with client and other design teams on tasks, assuring adherence to the task scope, and tracking of task budget. 
  • Executes effective communication skills with clients, agencies, and co-workers.  
  • Assist with the development of proposals and task orders by writing scopes of work and creating labor estimates.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff.
  • Must be able to be in person in the Columbia, MD office on a regular basis


Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, or related field

Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years of demonstrated professional experience using GIS, cartography, remote sensing, or a closely related. 
  • In-depth knowledge of spatial data concepts and best practices, map projections, topology, relational databases, data conversion, and interoperability. 
  • Experience with Esri Model Builder and/or experience in GIS programming with Python and the ArcPy suite of tools.
  • Experience with Arcade and SQL expressions for configuring content within ArcGIS applications.
  • Industry experience with GIS applied to water resource engineering, natural resources, environmental permitting, noise, stream restoration, resiliency, asset management, or coastal engineering.
  • Experience with Esri software including but not limited to ArcPro 3.x, ArcMap 10.x, ArcGIS Online, Enterprise, Portal, Field Maps, and Survey123.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Microstation as it relates to interoperability.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, especially MS Office (Word, Excel, and Access).
  • Strong verbal, organizational and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously and in an organized fashion.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Geography, GIS, or related field.
  • Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification.
  • Experience and interest in emerging technologies such as GeoAI and machine learning.
  • Experience with asset management principles, concepts, and software.
  • UAS Section 107 License.
  • Contributing member of a professional organization or interest in becoming active in a professional organization.
  • Familiarity and project experience with state and local governments in the Mid-Atlantic (Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC.)
