The Conservation and Stewardship Program Manager is a mid-level professional responsible for leading and managing the expansion of AFT's Working Lands for Conservation Program in the San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast regions of California. Under the direction of the California State Director, the Program Manager will work with farmers and a variety of partners and funders to develop, fund and implement planning and on-the ground projects related to soil, water, fish, and wildlife conservation. The Program Manager will also oversee the monitoring of AFT's conservation easements and promote farmland protection and engagement of farmers, ranchers, and partner organizations. The Program Manager is a full time (37.5 hours/week) position. The position is telework based and requires extensive travel throughout the San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast regions of California and occasional travel elsewhere in the state.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Working directly with farmers and farmland owners to improve natural resource conservation management and its practical application to farmland; with a focus on the San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast Regions of California
• Working collaboratively with farmers, farmland owners, agricultural leaders, partner organizations, public agencies in the region and federal, state and local governments;
• Engaging with stakeholders to identify barriers, create common ground solutions, and develop, fund, and implement projects that further the adoption of best management practices and projects including soil health and water conservation, groundwater recharge, and fish and wildlife habitat improvements.
• Working with AFT’s California's Regional staff to facilitate project development, funding, implementation and evaluation;
• Assisting in the development of programmatic logic models and natural resource conservation planning, and provides project management;
• Representing AFT at public meetings, field days and natural resource educational events;
• Assisting with the development of compelling proposals to secure funds for priority projects and provides input on reporting to funders and AFT leadership
• Other duties as assigned
• Bachelor's degree in relevant agricultural and/or natural resource management discipline and at least 7 years in implementing planning and implementation projects in such a field
• Experience managing complex or multiple projects, workload and finances under deadline
• Supervisory experience including motivating, leading, setting objectives, and managing performance
• Experience completing tasks independently and as a team with respect to timeline
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, Spanish fluency desired
• Demonstrating experience with grant writing or other types of fundraising or fee for service contracts
• Proficient in Geographical Information Systems and Office Suite, including PowerPoint
• Knowledge of San Joaquin and/or Central Coast watersheds and land use
• Politically savvy and experienced in partnership development, especially in the agricultural and natural resource community
• Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing agricultural preservation and/or conservation policy and plans
• Flexible, creative, and a self-starter with strong interpersonal communication skills
