Summary of company:

Oklahoma Watch, based in Oklahoma City and established in 2010, is nonpartisan and covers topics such as education, state government, criminal justice, social-welfare issues and public health. We distribute our stories to about 100 news outlets around Oklahoma for republication and have attracted national attention. 


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Oklahoma Watch is looking for an aggressive reporter to cover evictions and homelessness OR race and equity in Oklahoma. You'll work in a modern office in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City in a building that also houses the state's largest daily newspaper and largest commercial television station. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Oklahoma Watch.


Essential Functions:

  • Dig out ground-breaking exclusives.
  • Write with clarity on complex issues.
  • Cultivate sources effectively.
  • Strive to get out of the newsroom and talk with people, including in marginalized communities.
  • Acquire and analyze data in Excel and/or Access. 
  • Produce visualizations in Tableau, Carto or similar programs, or master one of these within a year.
  • Take photos and video, at times with a cell phone.
  • Live-post on X and use other social media while reporting.
  • Generate a steady stream of first-rate investigative story ideas.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or relevant field or a minimum of two years’ working experience as a journalist or reporter.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Capable of maintaining an ethical and objective standard in news reporting.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and accurately fact-check information.
  • Excellent observation and judgment skills.
  • Superb communication and networking skills, along with an aptitude to effectively extract information.

Hours and Location:

  • Position based full-time in Oklahoma City, OK.
  • This position operates full time (40 hours per week), Monday-Friday
  • Ability to work evening and weekends outside of 8:00 am-5:00 pm
  • Need to utilize personal transportation to travel for news gathering, must have valid driver’s license and auto insurance
