JOB OVERVIEW

The Director of Finance leads the day-to-day finance and accounting operations for the organization. This role is responsible for overseeing all accounting functions including maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures in compliance with GAAP in addition to all aspects of the Alliance’s financial systems and controls. The person in this position will supervise the Finance team and provide coaching and financial-support to revenue generating departments. The Director, Finance will ensure the integrity of the Alliance’s financial records, safeguarding of its assets and monitor the controls and efficiency of its transactional processes; including the preparation and tracking of a financial plan and forecast, and the timely and accurate reporting of financial results. This role reports directly to the Chief Operating & Finance Officer.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / KEY JOB OUTCOMES

  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the Alliance’s financial records through efficient and prompt monthly and annual closing processes 
  • Coordinate successful annual external audits of the Alliance’s financial statements and of its retirement plan and report to the Alliance’s Audit Committee
  • Effectively lead the hiring, training and employee development of the Finance staff and provide consistent coaching and financial support, to all departments across the organization
  • Develop and maintain a system of financial controls that safeguard the Alliance’s assets and ensures the appropriate disbursement of expenses and receipt of income; ensure that controls provide a strong return on investment of resources
  • Develop and maintain efficient transactional processes relating to income and expenses, including the recording and banking of income, and the disbursement of payroll and accounts payable
  • Collaborate closely with other relevant departments including People & Culture, Development, Visitor Services, Special Events and Design & Construction to ensure a seamless flow of information related to income and expense processes
  • Oversee the preparation of the Alliance’s annual budget and periodic forecasting during the fiscal year; ensuring that budgets and forecasts anticipate trends, challenges and opportunities 
  • Track changes in budget assumptions over time and develop methodology that provides Senior Leadership and the Board of Directors with information to help make well-informed decisions
  • Develop and produce timely financial reports that provide budget holders and Senior Leadership with the information needed to manage resources and make decisions based on accurate data
  • Forecast and manage the organization’s operational cash and investment resources
  • Ensure the accurate recording and tracking of the Alliance’s endowment and other investments, as well as the receipt and sale of stock and other non-cash donations and collaborate with investment and banking partners as needed
  • Prepare compliance reports and returns required by governmental agencies, including quarterly payroll tax returns, state unemployment returns, workers’ compensation audits, and annual charities registration reports. 
  • Support the Development team by providing financial data, budgets, and reports in the formats required for grant applications and reports to donors
  • Oversee and administer the Alliance’s risk management policies, including the renewal of all business insurance policies and processing of claims
  • Support to the Chief Operating & Financial Officer in the coordination of Finance Committee and Audit Committee meetings including the planning and preparation of the agenda, materials and meeting minutes

  Performs other job-related duties and functions as assigned

Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, accounting, Business Administration or other relevant discipline. Masters degree and/or CPA is highly preferred, but not required.
  • 7-10 years experience in accounting and finance and experience in the non-profit sector is preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in a leadership role overseeing all accounting and finance functions in the areas of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, budget and treasury

COMPENSATION + BENEFITS

  • Job Grade: 2 (Senior Managerial) 
  • Salary/Salary Range: $116,000 - 140,000 
  • Work Hours:  35-40 hours per week, minimum
  • FLSA Status: Exempt
