Description

Key role driving US Academic Marketing strategy for a portfolio of 1600+ books ranging from monographs to HE textbooks, crossover trade/publicity titles to school and public library reference. The Marketing & Publicity Director will drive brand recognition and sales for the academic program in the US and contribute to global strategy, tactics, and processes.


Budget responsibility for $21M revenue and a marketing budget of $350K+. The portfolio includes flagship brands Fairchild Books, Bloomsbury Libraries Unlimited, The Arden Shakespeare, Object Lessons, and 33 1/3. 


Additionally, manage one high-profile list – Music & Sound Studies – performing all US marketing and taking a global subject lead.


Responsibilities

  • Devise and oversee the implementation of the US marketing strategy and budget, including but not limited to:  Adoption and textbook marketing; Conference strategy and schedule; Website, email, and social media; Consumer, trade, and co-op advertising; point-person for Ingram and B&T; Optimizing discoverability, metadata, and SEO, including PPC ads; Content marketing including podcasts and blogs; Publicity strategy, schedule, and title selection
  • Lead the US Academic marketing team (currently 8 marketers, 1 publicity manager + 1 intern), set and monitor objectives, and encourage individual personal development
  • US and subject lead marketer for Music & Sound Studies, including the prestigious 33 1/3 series
  • Marketing strategy for reference, maximizing sales and communications to faculty and libraries, working with the global library marketing team, and integrating acquired portfolios from ABC-CLIO
  • Keep abreast of the US Higher Education market, competitors, and changes, guide team, and adapt marketing accordingly
  • Monitor and analyze ROI on marketing to evaluate and shape ongoing campaigns, sharing market insights and campaign results with stakeholders
  • Lead Author Care program globally, working with Editorial to provide guidance to the global team and materials for author support, and develop the author area on Bloomsbury.com 
  • Collaborate with colleagues globally, particularly: Line manager and the UK office to optimize global collaboration and website; Senior Manager for Marketing Ops to streamline systems, processes, and responsibilities; Bloomsbury Digital Resources Marketing Director to ensure holistic promotional plans for books and digital resources; US Sales, Adoptions, and Sales Operations teams in running US academic business; Editorial, including input into book proposals and author care 
Requirements

Strategy and   Planning

  • Ability to create effective   strategic marketing plans and turn company/departmental strategy into practical application
  • Managing a large budget and maximizing ROI through analytics

Management &   People Skills

  • Excellent project and time management of self and a small/medium   team, to meet deadlines and maximize quality and volume of outputs with the resources available
  • Leading a team, assigning roles, and delegating effectively
  • Optimizing team structure, processes, systems, and schedules 
  • Ability to work effectively across geographic and organizational boundaries
  • Ability to confidently lead meetings, communicate ideas, respond to questions, and communicate clearly, diplomatically and professionally both in writing and speaking

Market Knowledge   & Marketing Expertise

  • Extensive marketing experience—ideally in an academic publishing environment
  • Thorough understanding of scholarly, library, high school, and textbook market in the US
  • Publicity experience, including managing expectations internally and externally with authors
  • Understanding of digital marketing tools and principles including search, web, email, and social media

 Systems Knowledge

  • Customer relationship   management (CRM) 
  • Email software provider (ESP)   software
  • Content management system (CMS)   
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft   Office Suite including intermediate Excel

Location: 

 Strong preference for candidates to reside in the New York tri-state area, and be able to commute to Bloomsbury USA’s New York City office on a hybrid schedule. Would consider alternatives for the right candidate.
