Status/Hours: School Year - Monday – Thursday 2:15 pm – 6:30 pm; Friday 11:45 am – 6:30 pm

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: ESS Supervisor and School Principal

Pay Rate: $18.00/hr. 


Position Summary: 

Responsible for the general supervision and management of children from grades Kindergarten through 8 in an after-school setting


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervising, observing and interacting with students in accordance with the policies and philosophy of St. Michael’s School
  • Assisting students with homework and other school assignments
  • Providing snacks
  • Organizing and leading spiritual, social, and age-appropriate indoor and outdoor play activities
  • Redirecting student behaviors not consistent with school philosophy and implementing the program discipline system when necessary
  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment
  • Completing and maintaining accurate and comprehensive student attendance records, payroll time sheets, incident reports and all other compliance paperwork
  • Developing and maintaining a positive working relationship with other program staff and school faculty and personnel
  • Working cooperatively and effectively as a team member by communicating and contributing information on a continuous basis
  • Demonstrating professional, ethical, and responsible behavior at all times
  • Enjoy being with students, fostering their spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical development through the duties outlined above
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements

Religious Qualifications: 

  • Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred) 
  • Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy

Professional Qualifications: 

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED 
  • Clear criminal background check (a clear Livescan for the Diocese of San Diego is a condition of employment) 
  • Experience working with children within education, child development or related field
  • Professional appearance and manner
  • Good people skills
  • Knowledge and acceptance of the teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church
  • Interact with students while sitting, kneeling, squatting, bending or stooping
  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and work areas, including toys and other materials

Physical Requirements:

To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the teacher must: 

  • Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstrating 
  • Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
  • Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfaces
  • Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending 
  • Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class 
  • Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms 

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.
