Pay Rate:  $27/Hour - $30/Hour

Summary:

Under the direction of the Pastor, the Director of Catechetical Ministry is responsible for the development, administration, and coordination of the faith formation processes of the parish for all adults, youth and children, as well as youth and young adult ministry.


General Responsibilities

  • Supports the Church’s spiritual and pastoral mission
  • Performs as both a spiritual and administrative leader in the parish
  • Sets an example for employees by personal adherence to and compliance with personnel policies and procedures and by personal adherence to Catholic Doctrine and Catholic principles of morality
  • In addition to those listed here, accomplishes other duties as requested by the pastor

Primary Responsibilities

  • To coordinate all faith formation, youth and young adult programming
  • To assure the selection of appropriate catechetical texts and materials according to diocesan guidelines
  • To design or otherwise assure strong catechetical processes to meet the needs at each level
  • To coordinate and plan sacramental preparation programs in collaboration with parish staff and volunteers.
  • To coordinate and plan sacramental worship services including First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation
  • To coordinate, plan and oversee Vacation Bible School
  • To coordinate, plan and oversee participation in Religious Congress
  • To encourage appropriate parental participation at every level
  • To evaluate all programs at regular intervals, in collaboration with pastor

Personnel Responsibilities

  • To supervise faith formation staff, catechists and volunteers
  • To provide opportunities for on-going education and spiritual formation of staff and volunteers
  • To inform faith formation staff and volunteers of opportunities for professional courses/workshops for spiritual growth
  • To recognize, encourage and support the catechetical efforts of those involved in the faith formation processes of the parish

Administration Responsibilities

  • To schedule and oversee proper use of parish equipment and facilities 
  • To work with the parish Safe Environment Coordinator to ensure the faith formation staff, catechists and volunteers are compliant with Safe Environment protocols
  • To work in collaboration with the Business Office regarding volunteer procedures
  • To develop a faith formation budget in collaboration with the Business Office
  • To oversee and approve faith formation related expenditures
  • To work in collaboration with the Business Office regarding financial policies and procedures
  • To work in collaboration with the Business Office regarding personnel policies 
  • To work in collaboration with the Business Office regarding events and fundraising procedures
  • To maintain faith formation employee timecards in payroll system 
  • To assure the maintenance of catechist and student records
  • To prepare and recommend policies and procedures regarding parish faith formation to Pasto

Communication Responsibilities

  • To meet regularly with the pastor and pastoral team
  • To communicate policies and procedures to parents, students, catechists, team members, volunteers and other adults
  • To prepare a master calendar for catechetical ministry in collaboration with professional staff and parish leadership
  • To maintain communication with the Diocesan Office for Evangelization and Catechetical Ministry

Consultation Responsibilities

  • To be available to parents, students and adults for consultation, advice, referral
  • To serve as a resource to parish groups when appropriate
Requirements
  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese of San Diego and the Catholic Church; be in full communion with the Catholic Church
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written; excellent human relations and interpersonal skills
  • Be a self-starter; well organized; perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to exercise courtesy to all employees, parishioners and the general public
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to receive direction and be open to suggestions
  • Ability to supervise subordinates
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; punctuality is a must at all times; ability to travel locally as required
  • Possess basic computer skills such as word-processing and email communication
  • Professional bearing; clean and neat personal appearance
  • Successfully pass a background check as required by the Diocese of San Diego

Education, Training, and/or Experience 

  • A Master of Religious Education; or a Master of Religious Studies or Theology with an understanding of contemporary catechetics; or an Advanced Degree with a Certificate in Catechetical Ministry issued by the San Diego Diocesan Institute of the Diocese of San Diego
  • Master Catechist certification granted by the Office for Catechetical Ministry of the Diocese of San Diego; or the equivalent level of certification granted by another diocese in the United States
  • 5 years’ experience in a Catholic religious education environment as a practicing catechist
  • Prior successful management experience in a Church or social service setting, or a small-to- medium size firm

Working Environment/Availability/Guidelines 

  • Ability to function well in the church environment as well as in an office setting
  • A minimum of 40 core visible hours per week. 
  • Occasional weekend, overtime (hours beyond 40 core visible hours) and evening hours required
  • Functions according to the policies of Our Lady of Grace Church Personnel Policies and applicable canon/civil law

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the parish/school facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
