Description

Bloomsbury is seeking an Editorial Assistant to provide editorial and administrative support to our successful publishing program in the field of Music and Sound Studies.  Reporting to the Acquisitions Editor for the list, the Editorial Assistant will work on a full range of scholarly publications (monographs, reference works, introductory and crossover academic books); notable series such as the 33 1/3 books on popular music; and on Bloomsbury’s digital products in Music and Sound Studies. The Editorial Assistant will support the editorial team to achieve agreed revenue and profitability targets for their list; will manage and deliver the agreed handover targets for the list; will liaise with key stakeholders, both internal and external; and will support colleagues within the department. This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop a career in academic publishing.


Key Responsibilities

  • Keeps the publishing program on schedule through regular liaison with authors, and by maintaining and updating the frontlist plan for any given year 
  • Prepares scripts for handover to production to agreed standards and on schedule 
  • Sets up new titles on in-house databases, and ensures that any changes to projects are updated promptly and in line with key dates 
  • Commissions peer reviews for projects as requested by their manager; ensures these reviews are delivered in a timely way; records the progress of all projects under review 
  • Prepares and sends out contracts for new projects; ensures signed contracts are returned in a timely way and liaises with the royalty team as appropriate 
  • Puts together cover briefs, cover copy and briefs cover designs, where required 
  • Supports editors in managing backlist, including monitoring stock levels, as required 
  • Responds promptly and appropriately to external and internal inquiries 
  • Liaises closely with production and marketing colleagues 
  • Responsible for the provision of basic reports and sales information 
  • Completes pro forma and book orders 
  • Provides administrative support for the list and team 
Requirements
  • Calm and logical response under pressure 
  • Ability to multi-task, combined with ability to prioritize appropriately 
  • Attention to detail; accurate proofreading and excellent copywriting skills
  • Effective teamwork 
  • Handle and communicate information sensitively and professionally 
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) to internal and external contacts 
  • Acts as a spokesperson for the list and the Bloomsbury Academic Division, representing its key values, objectives, and policies, and upholds Bloomsbury’s missions and values, including our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within both our publishing and our workplace. 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign is helpful

Location

All candidates must reside in the NY tri-state area and be able to commute to our NY headquarters on a hybrid-remote schedule.

Salary Description
$47,500/yr (26.10/hour)
