Description

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Maintain the sterile field throughout surgical procedures 2.Scrub arms and hands according to established protocol 3.Assist the surgical team with scrubbing in and putting on gloves and masks 4.Pass surgical instruments to surgeons as needed during surgical procedures 5.Hold retractors and complete additional tasks at surgeon’s request during procedures 6.Handle tissue specimens obtained for laboratory analysis 7.Count sponges, rags, needles, and instruments before, during, and after procedures 8.Following surgeries, wash and sterilize all medical instruments and equipment 9.Clean, organize and restock the operating room following surgical procedures 10.Supply fluids for use during operations, including blood, glucose, plasma, and saline 11.Prepare patients for surgical procedures 12.Monitor patient’s’ vital signs throughout surgery 13.Ensure proper operation of equipment such as lights and suction machines 14.Offer technical assistance to the surgical team: surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND EDUCATION:

1.Participates in educational experiences designed to maintain competence.

2.Annually completes all required in-service and training (e.g. CPR, Infection Control, Safety, etc, as appropriate to the job) as well as all educational requirements.

3.Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliation to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field of expertise.

4.Seeks feedback to enhance own performance.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Completion of vocational certificate program in surgical technology2.Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting3.Two years of experience in a similar position preferred4.Able to monitor yourself, others, and machines to ensure proper performance5.Consistent ability to coordinate tasks and actions with a team6.Excellent active listening and interpersonal communication skills7.Persistent arm-hand steadiness and manual dexterity

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Working environment is generally favorable; however, there is exposure to risk in the form of disease and potential for exposure to electrical and explosion hazards common in a surgical and/or Pre-Op and PACU environment. High potential for exposure to blood and body fluids; Personal protective equipment is required.
