Waterfront Supervisor
Description

The Upper New York Conference of the United Methodist Church has an amazing opportunity for a Waterfront Supervisor at our Casowasco Camp & Retreat Center located in Moravia, NY, near the beautiful city of Auburn, NY. The Casowasco Camp & Retreat Center boasts over 200 wooded acres, a beautiful gorge, and over a mile of shoreline on Owasco Lake. 


The Waterfront Supervisor works with the Program Director and Activities Director to develop, organize, and supervise the summer waterfront program, in accordance with policies established by the Board of Camps and Retreat Ministries, and directives set by the Director.  This position is a seasonal position from May 27, 2024, through August 17, 2024, and offers on-site housing and meals. Training is either provided or paid for by the employer.  


The Waterfront Supervisor is accountable to the Program Director and Site Director.  


Responsibilities: 

   

1. Work in conjunction with the Activities Director to design and conduct waterfront programs that are appropriate and consistent with the goals of the camp.

2. Provide training, supervision, and evaluation of waterfront staff members.

3. Maintain the highest standards of waterfront safety in keeping with the requirements of the American Camp Association and the New York State Health Department.

4. Maintain records, reports, and information regarding the following: daily patron attendance, daily water and weather conditions, and incidents.

5. Work with the Head Lifeguard to ensure weekly rescue drills.

6. Instruct participants (campers, volunteers, and staff) in waterfront procedures, including safety procedures and the safe and proper use of facilities and equipment; enforce rules and regulations.

7. Coordinate the proper cleaning, maintenance, and inspection of equipment and facilities.

8. Test and classify the swimming abilities of campers and staff.

9. Supervise all waterfront emergency procedures.

10. Work in conjunction with the Program Director to create Waterfront staff schedules.  

11. Assist Director in administrative functions, such as filing, record-keeping, etc.

12.  Accept other assignments when necessary to provide for the effective operation of camp activities. This may include conducting activities related to athletics, games, environmental awareness, camp crafts, group initiatives, campfires, special events, worship services, music, etc.

Requirements

Qualifications:


Experience and Background:

· At least 21 years old (a variance with the Department of Health can be requested for a person 20 years old)

· Preferred Experience: canoeing, rowing, sailing, sail boarding, water skiing, and/or other waterfront activities

· Some experience over at least three seasons on a waterfront or as a lifeguard


Education:

· High school diploma or equivalent

· CPR/First Aid/AED certification required.  

· Lifeguard Training certification required. 

· Waterfront Module certification required. 

· Water Safety Instructor certification required.

·  Must reside on-site during the season at the convenience of the employer.

· Be of good character, and in sympathy with the goals and objectives of the camp

· Able to observe and respond to camper behavior.

· Able to work with people of different ages and skill levels.

· Able to plan and conduct activities.

· Able to move equipment and supplies, including boats.

  

Physical Requirements:

· Strong swimming, boating, and water rescue skills

· Able to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

· Able to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

· Able to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.

· Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

· Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

· Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers (including swimming and boating long distances, prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distance, and stretching)

· Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs.

· Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available.

· Able to live with daily exposure to the sun, heat, varying water conditions, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.

This position pays $400 per week and includes on-site housing and meals provided by the employer. Training is either provided or paid for by the employer.
