Staff Engineer in Timber Engineering


APA is seeking a Staff Engineer in Timber Engineering for the Tacoma, Washington laboratory. As a Staff Engineer for APA, one will use their engineering degree or other degree in a related field and practical experience in timber engineering, construction, or building code development to advance the engineered wood industry.


Responsibilities:

This key position will be responsible for the following key activities at APA’s Technical Services Division:

  • Develop or update APA recommendations for engineered wood products based on the latest building codes and standards.
  • Conduct product or assembly testing, evaluation, and research.
  • Prepare test reports based on data analysis or engineering.
  • Perform engineering services for the public and APA members.
  • Participate in the activities of building code and standard development.
  • Participate in committee activities relevant to the needs of APA members.
  • Interact with the staff of other organizations on technical issues.

The Company:

APA is a non-profit trade association whose members manufacture the majority of the structural wood panel products manufactured in North America, plus a host of engineered wood products that include plywood, oriented strand board, glued laminated timber (glulam), cross-laminated timber (CLT), wood I-joists, structural composite lumber, and mass timber.


Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $82,000 to $115,000 annually. The starting rate is dependent upon experience. There is potential for promotion to other positions. Benefits include:

Requirements

Qualifications:

An M.S. or advanced degree in engineering or other related fields, with a minimum of 2 years of practical experience in timber engineering or construction, or in building code development, is required. An E.I.T. or P.E. certificate or field experience in wood-frame building construction is a plus. The candidate must be willing to conduct testing in the lab, in addition to periodic travel, both domestically and internationally, and must be self-motivated and a team player.
