Summary/Objective

  • The Aquaculture Technician in Training will demonstrate a passion for fish husbandry, a good work ethic, attention to detail and will perform a variety of aquaculture husbandry duties to include daily farm chores including feeding, mortality removal, and screen scrubbing.

Essential Functions

  1. Knowledge of the facility
  2. Section, pond numbers, and rearing areas
  3. Knowledge of Emergency Action Plan
  4. Understands their role on the farm
  5. Dependable, trustworthy, and consistent
  6. General understanding of the feed schedule
  7. Understand the farm workflow
  8. Know locations of offline settling ponds and sumps
  9. Know locations of influent valves and head ditches
  10. Knowledge about fish barriers and their uses
  11. Tail screens, jump board, graders, screens, and etc..
  12. Knowledge of facility equipment
  13. Awareness of potential farm hazards
  14. Awareness of significant manure build- up, wasted feed, and broken tail screens
  15. Awareness of technician’s activities and the meaning and significance of withdrawal tags on the ponds.
  16. SDS locations and their use
  17. Biosecurity
  18. Hatch- house, outdoor, and disinfections
  19. Counting and picking mortality
  20. Ability to handle and select proper grading techniques
  21. Truck maintenance
  22. Truck cleanliness

20. Cleaning screens

21. Care of vehicles, equipment, and farm safety

22. Basic pond hygiene

23. Awareness and cleaning of debris on head ditch grates and first use ponds water entry points

24. Vacuum/ pumping operation and maintenance

25. Responsibilities include removing and recording mortalities

26. Monitor fish behavior and bring any abnormalities to supervisor’s attention.

27. Assist with fish transfers.

28. Perform routine maintenance on equipment and systems. Routine cleaning including sweeping raceways, cleaning and repairing graders and equipment on farms.

29. Always work to produce products people can trust by recognizing poor quality and communicating with management.

30. Complete all tasks including based on required safety guidelines.

31. Participate in all safety training

32. Perform any task on the farm, not just one specific job or task. No matter the job, skill or seniority of an individual.

33. Perform and practice bio-security procedures around the farm.

34. Maintain appropriate housekeeping and sanitation procedures on the farm ensuring proper protocol and required biosecurity measures are followed.

35. Provide prompt, friendly and courteous service to internal and external customers.

36. Help out with other areas on the farm when needed.

37. Continually pursue sustainability of our natural resources with every decision, decreasing waste and being conscious of individual choices.

38. Advocate positive change within our plant and company, empowering one another.

39. Other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in an outdoor environment. This role is routinely exposed to inclement weather conditions.

Physical Demands

This job involves heavy work exerting force frequently and constantly to move objects. The job involves lifting occasionally up to 50 lbs. Working in waders, climbing in and out of raceways and on and off trucks is required. The employee will be required to have a range of motion as follows:

  • Often requires walking or moving to accomplish tasks.
  • Often requires standing or sitting for sustained periods of time.
  • Occasionally requires stooping and reaching.
  • Occasionally requires pushing using upper extremities to press against something with steady force.
  • Occasionally requires pulling using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting is required on an occasional basis.
  • Repetitive motions are required which involve substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Often requires feeling of products perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Hearing must be adequate to perform duties and interact in person clearly and efficiently.
  • Manual dexterity as required for specific equipment or instrumentation use.
  • Requires clear vision, the ability to identify and distinguish color and to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Part-time position, which could include weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Part time position work as needed weekly hours will vary based on location needs. Expected hours of work begins in the early morning hours and will typically end mid-afternoon as determined by the location’s needs.

Local travel is required.

Required Education and Experience

  2. Driver’s license and good driving record required with reliable transportation to and from the work site.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. High school Education or GED preferred
  2. Aquaculture experience preferred.
  3. Aquaculture or related degree preferred.
