Haitian Employment Counselor
Description

Seeking a candidate to provide employment counseling, job skills training, and link newly arrived Haitians to employment opportunities with our Employment Program. Require fluency in the Haitian Creole language to best serve the affected community.


Full-time position with Haitian Creole language fluency required, 40 hours/week, non-exempt/hourly position, competitive hourly rate, medical/dental/vision insurance benefit eligibility, flexible spending account (FSA) program, 403b tax-deferred retirement savings option, paid time off, paid holidays, direct deposit, training opportunities, availability during office hours Monday through Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm with occasional availability before and/or after office hours


Please note that this position is scheduled to be funded through 6/30/2025 with a possible extension based on continued community need and the availability of funding.


Provide employment program orientation for potential program enrollees

Follow up on workforce referrals from Franklin County for mandatory clients and make outreach efforts in the community for voluntary participation in the program

Meet with clients to develop a service plan (employment & self-sufficiency goals) for their time in the program

Refer employment program clients to ESL programs and other supportive services

Do budgeting (pre-employment and post-employment) exercises with clients to help them set self-sufficiency goals

Collect all enrollment documents, have the client sign the contract and forward it to the administrative assistant to complete Web Tool upload

Schedule clients for BEST Tests in collaboration with the Enrollment Coordinator

Assist clients with setting up online classes on Zoom as necessary

Monitor client's attendance in ESOL classes and follow up for documentation in cases of absences

Case note all interactions with clients

Provide client support in job development, resume preparation, job referrals, interview practice, and other appropriate services

Introduce volunteers to clients

Collaborate with bachelor or master level student interns in the provision of program services

Perform periodic home visits/phone calls on a monthly basis to check in on clients’ progress

Transport clients or arrange transportation for clients to job sites for interviews, to apply for jobs, or assist with online job applications in the office

Communicate program expectations to clients

Maintain data and detailed documentation on services provided and complete required reports in a timely and professional manner

Obtain verification of client’s employment and record appropriately

Perform administrative duties related to clients' enrollment in the program and case closure

Provide language interpretation or coordinate contract interpreters as needed

Ensure provided services respect the rights, privacy, and dignity of the client and adhere to all contractual regulations

Perform other related duties to help meet the goals of the program and agency

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required

Prefer Bachelor's Degree or other four-year undergraduate degree in a social service, social work, or directly related profession

Strongly prefer a minimum of two years of work experience in the U.S.

Professional demeanor

Possess professional/academic abilities in English across all skill areas including clear pronunciation in speaking and correct grammar and spelling in writing

Fluency in written and spoken Haitian Creole (to serve Haitian Creole-speaking clients)

Resourceful, pro-active problem-solving ability

Ability to be self-directed with position responsibilities

Strong organizational skills

Skilled in interpersonal & intercultural communication

Experience working with diverse populations

Experience working with refugees, immigrants, and limited English-speaking communities

Advanced skills with Microsoft Excel, Word, Google Apps including Google Drive, e-mail, and internet

Ability to travel (without notice) around Columbus to transport and/or accompany clients to employment-related appointments

Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and current automobile insurance with clean driving record

Participate in a required background check
