Mechanical Drafter
Description

Under the direction of the Project Engineer/Mechanical Designer, the the Mechanical Drafter designs mechanical and/or electromechanical subassemblies used in the thermal processing of specialty materials.

  • Subassemblies typically operate within a controlled atmosphere or vacuum and consist of steel and stainless-steel fabrications in conjunction with other manufactured and purchased items. Design materials may also include copper, brass, aluminum, plastic, and others. Purchased items may include hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, electric actuators, sensors, and other components.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Works independently or collaboratively to draft detailed designs, and detailed fabrication drawings that fulfill contractual obligations, projects schedules, and company goals.
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners during the drafting and manufacturing phase.
  • Checks design and drafting work prior to Project Engineer approval to ensure requirements are satisfied.
  • Works closely with the Senior Mechanical Designer to solve problems that may arise during any phase of the project.
  • Performs a substantial amount of 2D detailing work for individual parts and assemblies.
  • Create drawings by planning arrangement of appropriate views, sections, and details as required to fabricate a machined component or correctly assemble a collection of parts.
  • Dimension and tolerance part drawings that may incorporate complex details.
  • Verify completed drawings against input requirements prior to submittal to engineering.
  • Execute revisions to detail, assembly, and customer drawings, or engineering specification documents.
  • Participate in other associated engineering activities.
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning, Tolerancing, and ASME Y14 or similar.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing concepts used in the fabrication and assembly of industrial assemblies, weldments, and detail parts.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, project requirements documents, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Strong working knowledge of CAD software e.g., Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Mechanical, Mechanical Desktop, and similar CAD platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Product Data Management software (e.g. Autodesk Vault, Solidworks PDM).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Solid understanding of drafting techniques and familiarity with engineering terminology
  • Ability to work independently and be a self-starter.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year College, analogous work experience considered.

Physical Demands:

  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, hear and talk.
  • The employee is frequently required to use hands.
  • The employee occasionally will be required to reach with hands or arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception.
  • The work environment is an office setting with periodic need to visit the plant floor.
  • This position may be required to work long hours extending into the weekends on some occasions.

Salary Description
$22 - $32 per hour
