Description

Primary Objective:

To provide for the healthcare of our Middle and Upper School students and employees during the school day.

  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers basic health care and first aid to ill or injured students and employees with warmth, knowledge, skill, and compassion.
  • Informs parents of ill or injured students in a timely manner
  • Serves as a medical resource and health advocate for students and employees.
  • Works with parents to create Care Plans (Diabetic, Allergy, Asthma, and Sickle Cell Action Plans) for students with significant health issues. 
  • Supervises prescribed medical treatments and medication administration according to school policy (e.g., OTC medications, breathing treatments, prescription medications, diabetic pump maintenance, etc.); ensure medicines are properly labeled and stored adequately and securely.
  • Stays current with needed skills and certification related to school health care.
  • Maintains daily and monthly log of student/employee clinic visits and action taken. 
  • Maintains student health records (paper and computer based); annually obtain and file required health forms for each student.
  • Annually compile a confidential list of students with allergies and other significant health issues and disseminate information to the appropriate teachers/coaches. 
  • Maintains compliance with current state immunization and health assessment requirements.
  • Notifies the local health department and, if needed, the State Board of Health if an unusual health situation arises (e.g., tuberculosis).
  • Assemble first aid kits for all field trips and each division office.
  • Prepare documentation of students’ medical information and provide to trip chaperones.
  • Provide training on how to use students’ medical information and how to document medical information to trip chaperones.
  • When appropriate, attend grade-level trips and retreats to ensure students’ wellness.
  • Support the planning and facilitation of the Upper School drug testing program in partnership with the US Dean of Students and US Principal.
  • Maintain AED and CPR instruction/certification of staff. 
  • At in-service, present examples of classroom action/treatment for head injuries, asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetic, bloodborne pathogens, and other significant health issues.
  • Conduct lice checks as needed for students, family members, staff and faculty. 
  • Inform the students and their families of any medical condition that is contagious and prevalent on campus, (e.g., H1N1, strep throat, lice, etc.)
  • Files accident report form on any accident/incident where the doctor might be seen because of the injury and possible insurance claim involved.
  • Maintains clean infirmary (including bed linens, pillow covers, etc.)
  • Inventories and orders infirmary supplies
  • Adhere to the bylaws, policies and procedures, and to all laws that govern the school and its actions
  • Participates in continuing nursing education opportunities in the community to promote student health, wellness, and preventative care
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by administration
Requirements

Professional and Personal Attributes, Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Registered Nurse with a current license to practice nursing in Georgia
  • Certified in CPR
  • Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment
  • Experience in school, pediatric, public, or community health nursing
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health
  • Knowledge of medicine, medical supplies, and equipment
  • Demonstrates appropriate, effective, and professional written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrates computer literacy and proficiency

Work for this position will take place primarily in an office, and secondarily in a classroom. The physical demands of this position include lifting up to 25 pounds regularly, and up to 50 pounds intermittently; carrying up to 25 pounds regularly, and up to 50 pounds intermittently; crawling rarely; pushing/pulling, climbing/balancing, reaching, crouching, and kneeling intermittently; stooping regularly; sitting, walking, standing, and bending often. To perform this job the person must be able to work for extended periods of time at a computer/keyboard; must be able to talk, hear, stand, sit, and/or walk for extended periods of time; and must possess normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Conditions may exist that create exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
