Description

This position will oversee a podcast team that leads the planning, execution, production, and editing of each series. The editor will help build the capacity for telling thoughtful, deeply-reported stories. The ideal candidate thinks carefully about story structure, has an ear for surprising audio, and can edit with flair. In addition, we are looking for an individual with an inclusive approach to their work and is committed to reflecting all perspectives in all communities, speaking truth to power, focusing on community engagement, and taking solutions-based approaches. The editor will report to WITF's Director of Journalism. 


The editor's primary responsibility will be to lead a three-person team (the editor, a reporter, and a producer) that creates compelling narrative reporting projects. This will include both a deep dive series and a short, concise series. The goal is to bring the audience fact-based, contextual reporting on issues impacting Central Pennsylvania through smart and engaging storytelling. The effort will combine probing journalism with creative community engagement to generate useful civic conversations.

The editor will have freedom to pursue their own stories as part of the podcast team.


 This is a hybrid position that will require access to a computer and internet at home as well as reliable transportation.  

Requirements
  • A strong ability to read, write, communicate, and speak in the English language
  • Community engagement is an important foundation of this team’s work. The team, working with WITF’s newsroom-wide engagement infrastructure, will use everything from larger community events (like News & Brews) to smaller ‘meet-ups’ with community members to gain a deeper understanding of issues and drive story choices and reporting avenues
  • Help generate new ideas, greenlight pitches from both the WITF and LNP | LancasterOnline newsrooms, and provide big-picture editing support as well as line edits at the script level
  • Prioritize solutions journalism and explanatory journalism as approaches to reporting
  • Strive to achieve a high level of narrative storytelling that’s driven by the voices of impacted people
  • Manage the team’s reporter and producer and assist them in organizing and focusing their stories throughout the reporting, writing, editing, and fact-checking processes
  • Ensure a diversity of voices and perspectives in stories
  • Assist hosts/reporters/producers with preparation for interviews and reporting assignments
  • Edit and mix audio
  • Assist with future planning and strategic partnerships
  • Monitor shows for overall balance, variety of stories, and types of pieces
  • Regularly provide constructive critiques of stories in meetings with staff and contributors
  • Other duties as assigned
Salary Description
$68,000-73,000/year
