POSITION DESCRIPTION: Park Technician
POSITION GOAL: Maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment at assigned park.
CLASSIFICATION: Hourly – Full Time – Year-Round – Non-exempt
COMPENSATION: $16.621/hour. Employer and employee contribute to Public Employees Retirement System.
REPORTS TO: Park Services Supervisor
DIRECT REPORTS: None
Level 1 Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform basic carpentry to assist in the repair of buildings, signs, tables, etc. for small park projects.
- Assist in basic concrete projects.
- Perform basic routine preventative maintenance (vehicle checks, change oil and fluids, rotate tire) on vehicles and equipment.
- Complete basic equipment operation training and operate equipment safely (utility vehicles, mowing and string trimming, blowers, chain saws, vehicle lift, brush chipper).
- Handle, clean and store all tools safely and properly.
- Adhere to basic safety rules and procedures including equipment tagout procedures and MSDS program.
- Perform snow plowing and application of ice control measures.
- Tree bucking and chipping
- Maintain landscapes and formal landscape beds to established standards. Plant, fertilize, prune and transplant trees and landscape plants.
- Safely apply herbicides/pesticides under a certified applicator.
- Perform basic plumbing projects, winterize restrooms, fountains, etc.
- Perform mowing, weed eating, edging and trimming at assigned park.
- Lead volunteer group maintenance projects.
- Identify and report safety concerns and sub-standard maintenance conditions.
- Clean facilities and vehicles; perform custodial work including trash and litter pick up.
- Complete basic painting and staining projects and properly clean equipment.
- Other Park related duties as assigned.
Level 2 Duties and Responsibilities include all of the above, and:
- Perform repair of buildings, signs, tables, etc. for small and medium-sized park projects.
- Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Complete equipment operation training and operate equipment safely (skid steer, tractor, stone roller, dump truck).
- Operation, installation and removal of snow plowing and ice control equipment.
- Direct landscape bed maintenance and turf management.
- Application of herbicides and pesticides.
- Basic electrical work.
- Complete basic plumbing projects.
- Perform painting and staining projects.
- Perform medium-sized concrete and masonry projects.
- Plan and implement volunteer-based work projects; lead volunteer groups.
- Identify and properly address safety concerns and sub-standard maintenance conditions.
- Assist with orientation of new park staff, seasonal maintenance staff, interns and volunteers.
- Tree felling, bucking and chipping.
- Direct routine maintenance and audit corrections on park trails.
EQUIPMENT USED: Variety of riding and walk-behind mowers; small engines, trimmers, saws and pruners, power tools, chainsaws, hand tools, utility vehicles, trucks, snow removal equipment, chemical dispensing systems, light and medium-duty tractors, safety equipment.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience: Entry to moderate level experience in general turf, grounds and building maintenance, depending on assigned level.
Level 1 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:
- Ability to perform tasks with moderate levels of supervision.
- Basic carpentry skills.
- Basic understanding of concrete installation process and tools.
- Basic equipment operation skills (utility vehicles, mowing and string trimming, blowers, chain saws, vehicle lift, brush chipper).
- Basic vehicle maintenance skills.
- Knowledge of proper storage and maintenance of work tools.
- Ability to operate snow plow and ice control equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to maintain formal landscapes and landscape beds including tree planting, fertilizing, pruning, transplanting.
- Lawn and yard maintenance skills.
- Janitorial skills.
- Basic plumbing skills necessary to complete projects such as winterizing restrooms and fountains, water shut off, clog removal, etc.
- Basic construction-oriented math skills.
- Ability to effectively instruct and lead volunteers.
- Painting skills.
- Knowledge of maintenance and safety standards; understanding of maintenance-related safety rules and procedures including equipment tagout and MSDS program.
- Able to successfully complete the following training within 12 months of hire and maintain certifications:
- CPR and First Aid
- OSHA 10-hour safety training
- Qualified Sawyer trainee
- Trained Service Technician for pesticide application
- Must be 18 years of age and maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Level 2 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required include all of the above, and:
- Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform small/medium-sized park maintenance projects such as installation of split rail fence, assembling tables and benches, replacing wood siding, etc.
- Ability to perform vehicle maintenance and minor mechanical repairs (e.g. brake jobs, starter/alternator replacement) with minimal direction.
- Equipment maintenance skills.
- Proficient in operation of equipment (skid steers, tractors, stone rollers, dump trucks, etc.).
- Ability to safely and effectively equip and operate snow plow and ice control equipment.
- Knowledge of basic turf management procedures.
- Proficient in application of pesticides and fertilizers; able to successfully complete and maintain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License with 2 additional categories (3A, 4A, 5, 6C, 7, 8, or 10A).
- Must obtain and maintain Qualified Sawyer certification.
- Basic electrical skills.
- Plumbing abilities necessary to complete projects such as replace/repair Sloan valves, traps, supply lines, etc.
- Ability to efficiently and neatly perform painting/staining projects; general understanding of paints and solvents.
- Ability to develop meaningful volunteer projects.
- Ability to effectively orient seasonal staff, new park staff, interns and volunteers to park processes and policies.
- Knowledge of trail audit and maintenance procedures.
- Skills necessary to perform concrete and paver repairs and replacement projects.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
- Workweek may include weekends, holidays, and evenings.
- Requires regular lifting up to 40 lb. and occasional lifting up to 60 lb; will work mostly outdoors in most weather conditions.
