Job Summary: 


WITF’s Media Literacy and Youth Voice Program Coordinator has primary responsibility for designing, coordinating, and implementing WITF’s original media literacy and youth journalism programs. This requires knowledge of information literacy and various published frameworks for media literacy education in addition to pedagogical knowledge and skill to implement instruction with students in grades 3 – 12. To accomplish this, the Program Coordinator is expected to work closely with various WITF departments including journalism, digital media, and development. To design high-quality standards-aligned instruction, the Program Coordinator must maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging media literacy standards as well as PA Core Standards (particularly in K-12 Civics Education), along with the NCSS C3 Framework. Further, the Program Coordinator is expected to engage learners in using media and technology in media literacy and youth voice initiatives. WITF Education is committed to instructional design and teaching that implements the most research-based cutting-edge pedagogies and the Program Coordinator is expected to model these practices in all aspects of program design and implementation. Professional learning opportunities are available to assist in maintaining current knowledge of these frameworks. Direct instruction includes teaching in our K-12 Explore in the Classroom program (i.e., inside K-12 schools during the traditional the school day), during weekend community engagement programs, in afterschool settings, and leading summer camps. In addition to curriculum development and direct instruction, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for designing and instructing professional learning workshops, seminars, and courses. The Program Coordinator is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with district and school administrators and teachers in WITF’s 19-county geographic region. Occasional travel and weekend commitments will be required for this position. If applicable, the Program Coordinator will also assume supervisory responsibility for part-time instructors, consultants, and/or interns. 


 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:1. Design, coordinate, and implement WITF’s Media Literacy program for students in grades 3 – 12.

  • Research already existing media literacy programs that target upper elementary, middle and high school students 
  • Reach out to and learn from developers of already existing programs as well as teachers who might utilize this program (e.g., News Literacy Project, National Association for Media Literacy Education, MediaWise, KidCitizen, iCivics, etc.)
  • Work closely with WITF staff across departments to help locate content, solicit input, and co-develop materials 
  • Research, review, and design effective pedagogical strategies appropriate for upper elementary, middle and high school students 
  • Assist in the development of an articulated media literacy program framework 
  • Maintain depth of knowledge of PA Core Standards and their intersections with information and media literacy (e.g., climate and media; teaching with primary sources and media; government/politics/civics and media, etc.)
  • Design and implement programs that engage youth in using media and technology in STEM education
  • Coordinate partnerships with K-12 school administrators and teachers as well as community-based and afterschool educational programs (e.g., 21st Century Community Learning Centers)
  • Maintain depth of knowledge of grades 3-12 academic programs administered by traditional public, charter, and private schools and coordinate partnerships between WITF and academic programs
  • Consult with other educators and experts to embed multilingual considerations and supports in media literacy curriculum and instruction
  • Author multiple instructional plans that align to WITF’s media literacy curriculum
  • Implement instructional plans in various classrooms using cutting-edge pedagogies (e.g., project-based learning, inquiry-based instruction, etc.) and research-based teaching practices (e.g., hands-on, realia, modeling, scaffolded, etc.)
  • Co-solicit funding opportunities to support continuation and further development of the media literacy program (e.g., grants, contracts, sponsors, etc.)
  • Assist with developing and implementing marketing initiatives to inform teachers, school/program administrators, families, and funders about the media literacy program
  • Assist with collecting and analyzing data to measure program impact and effectiveness
  • Recruit participating schools/classrooms by facilitating relationships and securing school district partnerships 
  • Maintain the media literacy section of the WITF education webpage with instructional plans, sponsor recognition, and photos/videos from the program
  • Coordinate and schedule school visits with district and school administration, teachers and staff in school districts during the school year (fall and spring). 
  • Prepare and deliver presentations about the program to stakeholders, including WITF staff, WITF Board of Directors, corporate partners, scholarly audiences, etc.
  • Research and purchase materials (e.g., books, handouts, and teaching supplies) for program and adhere to all financial procedures
  • Collaborate with and support other Education staff to ensure continuity and delivery of media literacy throughout preschool through university programs and across academic disciplines such as literacy, STEM, social studies, etc. 
  • Compile data, evaluation results, student assessment artifacts, pictures/videos, and statistics used for summaries and reports for the Vice President of Education, development team, and corporate partnerships staff

2. Design, coordinate, and implement Youth Voice programs (grades 3-12)

  • Lead the development of youth journalism initiatives. These could be in the forms of digital reporting, school news networks, junior journalist apprenticeship programs, and more! These programs may occur in schools, afterschool programs, on weekends, and as summer camps in addition to other possibilities for implementation.
  • Develop support resources for teachers to engage students in developing critical information/media literacy skills
  • Engage teachers in professional learning workshops, seminars, and courses to prepare them to lead students in developing media/information literacy skills 
  • Assist with the development of community-wide large-scale events that spotlight youth voice and media literacy and give students and families an opportunity to experience high-quality educational opportunities in a community-based setting. This includes:
  1. Planning learning stations
  2. Working with WITF Events Manager to develop project management scheme and coordinate logistics (timeline, deadlines, contracts, event schedule, facilities requests, marketing, production, billing/invoicing, volunteers, etc.)
  3. Purchase materials
  4. Provide day-of event leadership and coordination
  • Work with Senior Vice President of Education and other education staff to design experiences that connect to other wide-scale WITF programs such as Careers that Work, STEM and Innovation, Multilingual Literacy, and more.
  • Plan and lead educational programs such as field trips to WITF’s Public Media Center to create in the digital makerspace 

3. Develop/Co-Develop and Lead/Co-Lead Teacher Professional Learning Workshops

  • Work with schools, IUs, and community organizations to determine professional learning needs
  • Design or co-design workshops that teach educators to use WITF or WITF-affiliated materials (e.g., WITF content/productions and PBS Learning Media)
  • Assist in processing Act 48 continuing education credits  

4. Participate in Professional Meetings and Collaborations

  • Attend and represent WITF’s Media literacy and Youth Journalism initiatives at collaborations/meetings/initiatives of (including but not limited to):
  1. Pennsylvania Department of Education
  2. Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)
  3. Pennsylvania Department of Education
  4. United States Library of Congress (LoC)
  5. National Association for Media Literacy Education
  6. National Council for the Social Studies
  7. National Council for History Education
  8. National Council of Teachers of English
  9. Lancaster County STEM Alliance 
  10. Internal workgroups (e.g., event productions, marketing, development, strategic planning, diversity, etc.)
Requirements

Required Qualifications:


1. Bachelor’s degree in mid-level or secondary Social Studies/History/English or PK-12 Library Science is required with an active or inactive PA Instructional I or II certification 

2. A minimum of 2 years’ full-time experience working in direct instruction with K-12 students in traditional public, charter, private, or community schools within the United States. 

3. Extensive experience with designing and delivering academic standards-aligned instruction 

4. Experience with conceptualizing new projects, aligning curriculum with standards, scope & sequencing development, grant writing/application, and/or working within grant-funded projects (Title I, Title III, ESSER, etc.) 

5. Demonstrated effective communication with external partners and families

6. Knowledge of evidence-based programs and best practices to enhance the instructional experiences of students who experience significant and often persistent opportunity gaps (e.g., students experiencing poverty, homelessness, foster care, transiency, or who are English learners)

7. Excellent critical and analytical thinking skills

8. Intermediate experience designing assessments for student learning and evaluations for measuring program effectiveness

9. Experience developing measurable objectives to determine effectiveness of educational programs 

10. Experience in developing and delivering professional learning workshops, courses, and presentations for adult learners 

11. Proficient computer literacy with experience in Microsoft Office programs, databases, Excel, Outlook, data entry, email and experience managing file sharing with Google Drive

12. Adept at using virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams 

13. Excellent verbal skills, including public speaking experience 

14. Excellent writing skills, including experience in writing for web communications and correspondence

15. Ability to prioritize and organize multiple activities and effectively coordinate the work of large teams to consistently meet deadlines

16. Strong ability to work independently as well as work positively within a larger team and among various clients and field staff

17. Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and clients both internal and external to maintain positive and collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and to remain calm in unpredictable situations

18. Must have ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues, co-workers, community agency personnel, and students and families


Additional Eligibility Qualifications: 


1. Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).

2. Current, approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificates showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours training every five (5) years.


Physical Requirements:


1. Sedentary: Able to sit for extended periods of time, occasional walking, standing (as necessary) and able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

2. Dexterity: Finger movements (computer keyboard, calculator), eye-hand coordination (office equipment, etc.).

3. Audio-Visual Requirements: Within normal range with or without correction.

4. Is able to move throughout all buildings, floors and grounds.

5. Worksite Environment: Primarily indoor office setting with occasional exposure to outdoor elements/climate during the day.

6. Mental demands: Steady response to unpredictable situations, ability to remain calm and productive during stressful situations. Demonstrates independent judgement, discretion and is able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

7. Ability to travel to various work site locations and meetings on a frequent basis. 


Time and Site Requirements:


1. This is a full-time, exempt position following a 12-month work schedule.

2. 25% day travel for site visits, meetings and conferences

3. >10% occasional overnight travel for conferences, meetings, site visits

4. This position offers a non-permanent hybrid work schedule dependent upon individual performance and organization demands. 

5. Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.

Salary Description
$58,000 - 62,000/year
