POSITION DESCRIPTION: Park Services Crew Leader


POSITION GOAL: Ensure high levels of visitor satisfaction by assisting in the management of maintenance operations of park facilities and grounds to the highest professional standards and according to Metroparks mission and strategic objectives.


CLASSIFICATION: Hourly, Non-Exempt, Year-Round, Full Time


COMPENSATION: $21.37/hr. Employer and employee contribute to Public Employees Retirement System


REPORTS TO: Park Services Supervisor or Operations Regional Manager


DIRECT REPORTS: Seasonal Grounds Maintenance Assistants 


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the supervision of maintenance, and public service activities for assigned parks.
  • Assign duties to staff; schedule shifts and project assignments; train staff members in their duties.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities and resolve problems
  • Actively participates in planning of department budget.
  • Lead staff in the performance of general grounds maintenance activities including grass mowing, snow removal, road repair, erosion control, storm clean up, etc.
  • Lead staff in the performance of a variety of building maintenance activities including janitorial duties, plumbing, painting, drywall, roofing, and minor electrical.
  • Confer and cooperate with other departments, partners and operations districts in order to ensure coordination of activities; maintain interagency communications as needed.
  • Record data pertaining maintenance activities.
  • Observe and monitor staff performance in order to ensure efficient and safe operations, achievement of goals and adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Stay current with technological advancements within the division and district including communications, data acquisition and dissemination.
  • Maintain data on park district resources including facilities, fleet and equipment inventory.
  • Supports training and development of staff including general orientation, core training, on-the-job training and career development.
  • Cooperate with planning department and safety officer to ensure effective risk management.
  • Works with volunteer program staff to create volunteer opportunities and effectively use volunteer resources to accomplish projects and programs
  • Participate in strategic planning activities; carry out assigned strategic initiatives to support Metroparks strategic plan and operating principles.
  • Direct the work of volunteers and interns.
  • Schedule and coordinate contract services.
  • Other park duties as assigned.


EQUIPMENT USED: Typical maintenance and construction equipment including power tools, chain saws, tractors, truck/trailer combinations, and heavy equipment; computer equipment and related software, audiovisual equipment; cameras, GPS systems, AED units.




Requirements

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.


Education: Associate Degree in Parks and Recreation services, Natural Resources, Grounds Management, or related field, or combination of education and work experience equivalent to a degree.


Experience: Moderate park or outdoor operations experience including leadership responsibilities. Horticultural, arboricultural and project management experience preferred. Supervisory experience preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service; this includes meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to effectively lead others utilizing shared leadership principles
  • Ability to manage files and records.
  • Ability to promote innovation and lead change.
  • Knowledge of basic word processing and office functions using Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to conduct fact-based problem analysis, identify and implement effective solutions.
  • Knowledge of PERRP and OSHA compliance requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form; knowledge of effective communication principles.
  • Knowledge of procedures, techniques and best practices in maintenance of facilities/equipment in park operations, land/campus management and natural resources management.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics.
  • Ability to deliver presentations and training programs.
  • Ability to establish and sustain critical relationships both internally and externally, including building relationships with customers, community partners and volunteers.
  • Ability to manage the time of self and others.
  • Must obtain the following certifications within 1 year of employment and fulfill requalification and recertification requirements
  • First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Pesticide Applicator’s license
  • OSHA 10-hour training
  • Qualified Sawyer Trainee

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • 40 hours per week; will require some weekends, holidays, and evenings; work hours will vary based on departmental and organizational needs. 
  • Requires occasional lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds; ability to walk and work outdoors for extended periods of time in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold.  
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. May require business use of personal vehicle. Class A CDL preferred
  • Outdoor and indoor work in all weather conditions.
