POSITION DESCRIPTION
Planning and Construction Intern
POSITION GOAL: Obtain practical work experience and supplement a formal educational program while providing assistance to the Planning and Construction Department. Assignments may include planning designs and construction drawings, specifications, cost estimates, office work, fieldwork, and construction inspection.
CLASSIFICATION: Hourly – Non-Exempt – Intern
COMPENSATION: $17.00 per hour. Employer and employee contribution to Public Employees Retirement System
REPORTS TO: Chief of Planning and Construction Officer
DIRECT REPORTS: None
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge and experience proficiency with industry standard computer programs including AutoCAD or related software, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Bluebeam or Adobe software.
- Research and data collection skills.
- Interpersonal skills such as: problem-solving, positivity, open to feedback, integrity, teamwork, persistence, dependability.
- Ability to create and assist in creation of construction documents.
- Ability to assess construction projects and conditions.
- Ability to use survey equipment and measuring devices with training.
- Ability to perform research relating to construction materials, specifications, and installation techniques.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the production of construction drawings and specifications.
- Perform field inspections, audits, data collection and physical assessments of capital assets.
- Assist in the production of conceptual and planning drawings for park improvement projects.
- Scanning documents, plan sets, organizing project and departmental files
- Assist in the development of department processes and standards.
- Investigate, research and compile information as necessary to complete studies, cost estimates and reports.
- Inspection and monitoring of construction projects including recording observations, completing daily inspection reports and required documentation
- Develop computer software skills to take fully advantage of design and planning software.
- Other Park District work related duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED: Variety of office equipment, survey equipment, writing instruments, printers, other computing devices. AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Adobe, utility vehicles, and park vehicles as assigned.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.
Education: Has completed at least one year towards a bachelor’s degree program in landscape architecture, architecture, civil engineering or related field and is currently pursuing or has recently completed a bachelor’s degree.
Experience: Some experience with AutoCAD or other related drafting programs, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint, Bluebeam or Adobe software.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Up to 40 hours per week. Schedule may include evenings and weekends as needed.
- Length of internship is Minimum of 10 weeks. Continued length of internship and hours per week may be variable, dependent on needs of the employee and the district; internship may be extended as agreed upon between employee and Metroparks but shall not exceed three years total or one year beyond graduation from degree program.
- Work is conducted in an office setting and periodically in the field. Physical agility to visit construction sites and transport equipment necessary for required fieldwork.
- Ability to perform on-site inspections of park district assets and construction projects in all site and weather conditions.
- Location: Fallen Timbers office. Will require travel to parks throughout Lucas County.
- May require use of personal vehicle.
