JOB SUMMARY: Manages the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the Accounting Department while overseeing the general accounting and financial reporting functions, including general ledger (GL), accounts receivable (A/R), accounts payable (A/P), grants and payroll.


1. The ability to adapt to a changing work environment and meet challenges presented throughout the day.

2. Responsible for monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and documents ensuring that all financial records are maintained in compliance with internal policies as well as US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

3. Leads and directs the day-to-day activities of accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger and payroll while managing the accuracy and productivity of accounting staff members including interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning, directing work, performance reviews, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

4. Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting and reporting financial data for distribution to the CFO, President, executive staff and Board of Directors.

5. Maintains adequate cash balance based on current and future expected expenses.

6. Ensures timely remittance of federal, state and local tax payments.

7. Primarily responsible for financial statement preparation and analysis for THA and Tennessee Hospital Education & Research Foundation (THERF). Supervises staff and provides oversight for preparation of financial statements and analysis for all other THA-related entities.

8. Analyzes trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses for THA and THERF. Reports THA and THERF finances to department management and offers suggestions about resource utilization, grant utilization strategies and assumptions underlying budget forecasts.

9. Responsible for proper timing and application of revenue recognition rules. This currently entails a real-time review of each revenue source, any changes needed and determination of proper timing of revenue recognition. Involves significant interaction with all revenue generating departments.

10. Assists with the administration of the funds for the hospital assessment program.

11. Monitors daily cash flow and transfers funds between accounts and investments as needed.

12. Directs the following activities: grant reporting and compliance, Unemployment Fund administration, inventory and asset management.

13. Oversees banking processes and works closely with bank personnel to comply with company policies and procedures.

14. Interfaces with outside audit firms, coordinating work relating to external audits in the yearly review of the Association financial records. Is further responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations related to areas of responsibility resulting from the audit findings.

15. Acts as administrator for accounting software system, making programming changes as needed.

16. Assists in creating policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable rules, laws and regulations.

17. Collaborates with outside insurance carrier to review and complete annual renewal policies for business.

18. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.

19. Must be available in the office during regular office hours unless a hybrid work environment is in place.

20. The ability to sit for long periods of time.


Dollar value: Net Assets for all consolidated THA companies on December 31, 2023, was $77.9 million.

Volume: Total revenue of THA and its subsidiaries (including unrealized gain/loss) exceeded $38.4 million during 2023. The total dollars related to the hospital assessment equals $455 million annually.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: (Positions reporting directly to this position and their areas of responsibility)

1. Accounting Specialist: Processes accounts receivable and enrolls employees in and discontinues employee enrollment in health, dental, vision and life insurance in accordance with Association plan documents.

2. Accounting Specialist: Responsible for payroll and accounts payable functions for THA, its subsidiaries and affiliate organizations. Performs other related accounting duties as required.

3. Senior Accountant: For Tennessee Center for Health Workforce Development (TCWD) and THA Innovative Solutions, prepares balance sheets, profit and loss statements and other financial reports. Responsibilities also include analyzing trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses. Reports TCWD and THA Innovative Solutions finances to accounting department management and offers suggestions about resource utilization, grant utilization strategies and assumptions underlying budget forecasts. 

4. Payroll Manager/HR Coordinator: This position is a shared position for accounting and human resources. Coordinates and oversees all aspects of payroll processing operations. Establishes and oversees payroll processes and procedures for routine processing, tax reporting and internal financial requirements. Also ensures compliance with governmental regulations. Performs other accounting duties as required.

Educational and Experience Requirements Needed to Perform the Duties of the Job:

1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting.

2. At least three years of related experience.

3. Supervisory experience required.

Licensing or Other Special Certifications Required:

Certified Public Accountant certification required.

Skills Required to Perform the Duties of the Job:

1. Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills.

2. Must be able to accurately calculate figures and amounts for all bookkeeping, payroll, budgets, statistical analysis and probability statements.

3. Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls and financial reporting.

4. Extensive computer knowledge with the ability to quickly learn new and advanced applications.

5. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

Salary Description
$125,000-$135,000 annually
