Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish is seeking an Assistant Shelter Manager for the Migrant Ministry.

Migrant Ministry Mission

Our Lady of Guadalupe Migrant Ministry offers shelter, dinner, and breakfast to Spanish-speaking migrant men who either have no destination (no sponsor) or who need to work for some time to earn money to travel to their destination.   

El Ministerio Migrante de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ofrece alojamiento, cena y desayuno a hombres migrantes de habla hispana que no tienen destino (sin patrocinador) o que necesitan trabajar durante algún tiempo para ganar dinero y viajar a su destino. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist the shelter manager with the day-to-day activities at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Migrant Shelter, including the following: establishment and implementation of shelter norms, check-in process for migrants, and maintenance of the physical space.
• In communication with the shelter manager, ensure the following:
• That the kitchen, living quarters, bathing facilities, storage area and surroundings of the shelter are clean, organized, and sanitary.
• That shelter norms are implemented fairly and consistently.
• That supplies for shelter are stocked and organized. Coordinate process for welcoming new migrants to shelter, and the process for termination of migrants who are approaching maximum number of days at shelter.
• Support volunteers and migrants through conflict resolution; recognize when needed to help resolve a conflict, and when to ask for help from others on parish staff.
• Facilitate the arrival of external agencies who come and offer services and presentations for the migrants. When necessary, make contact with these agencies, and/or be present to welcome them.
• Assist with food preparation and service when needed.
• Attend periodic staff and volunteer meetings in order to coordinate shelter efforts.
• Ayudar al gerente de refugio con las actividades diarias en el albergue para migrantes de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, incluyendo lo siguiente: establecimiento e implementación de normas, proceso de registro      de migrantes y mantenimiento del espacio físico.
• En comunicación con el administrador del refugio, asegúrese de lo siguiente:
  • Que la cocina, la vivienda, las instalaciones de baño, el área de almacenamiento y los alrededores del refugio estén limpios, organizados y sanitarios.
  • Que las normas de alojamiento se implementen de manera justa y consistente.
  • Que los artículos para el refugio estén abastecidos y organizados. Coordinar el proceso de bienvenida a nuevos migrantes al refugio y el proceso de terminación de migrantes que se acercan al número máximo de días en el refugio.
  • Apoyar a los voluntarios y migrantes a través de la resolución de conflictos; reconocer cuándo es necesario ayudar a resolver un conflicto y cuándo pedir ayuda a otros miembros del personal parroquial.
• Facilitar la llegada de agencias externas que vengan a ofrecer servicios y presentaciones para los migrantes. 
• Ayudar con el servicio de alimentos cuando sea necesario.
• Asistir a reuniones regulares de personal y voluntarios para coordinar los esfuerzos del refugio.

• Bilingual (Spanish/English).
• Ability to delegate, inspire leadership and follow-through in others. This job is only possible if the person can get volunteers to take responsibility for the bulk of the day-to-day work.
• Must have a valid CA driver's license, a personal vehicle, and a willingness to travel for shelter-related matters.
• Possess self-initiative and demonstrated attention to detail.
• Respectful yet firm communication style.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaborate with staff and volunteers
• Understanding of foreign-born immigrant populations
• Ability to have difficult conversations with a collaborative mindset and by applying self-awareness.
• Must be able and willing to perform well in a stressful environment.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including regular evening hours and weekends.
• Bilingüe (español/inglés).

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain at the Migrant Ministry facility at night. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the facility, as well as maneuver throughout the facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
