Position Title:  Assistant to the Youth Minister

Supervised by: Pastor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Employment type:  Part time, including evenings and some weekends

Salary: $18 per hour, 6 hours per week

Santa Sophia Parish seeks an Assistant to the Youth Minister who is joyfully and passionately Catholic, in good standing with the Church, and living a life of ever-deepening virtue. About Santa Sophia Youth Ministry:

Youth ministry will focus on forming high school teens as disciples of Jesus Christ within a community of believers. We will hold weekly youth group on Tuesday evenings which include dinner and a bible study. During each month we will engage teens with opportunities to encounter God and grow in community through one sacred activity, one service activity, and one social activity. In the summer we will facilitate teens’ participation in summer camps that build them up in the faith.


Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Pastor, the Assistant to the Youth Minister is responsible for helping the youth minister to prepare for and host youth ministry events.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and print copies of Bible study material.
  • Pick up dinner for youth group.
  • Prepare the meeting space for hosting youth group.
  • Set up basic audio-visual equipment if needed (for example, a TV or projector).
  • Assist with youth group as a mentor in virtue and holiness for high school teens.
Requirements

Required skills and qualifications:

  • An evident love for the Catholic faith.
  • Relates well with others, especially youth, while respecting ministerial boundaries.
  • Organized.
  • Familiar with how to use an office copy machine.
  • Some proficiency with basic software, such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, One Drive, and Canva.
  • Some proficiency with Instagram and Flocknote.
  • Basic proficiency in how to use Apple TV and computers for showing videos.
  • Enjoys being a host, decorating, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Experience in a Catholic youth ministry environment preferred.
  • Basic Catechist Certification from the Diocese of San Diego or equivalent preferred.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) preferred but not required.
  • Strong organizational skills, including time management, delegation, planning, and the ability to balance multiple projects at a time.
  • Highly self-motivated, creative, and energetic.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parishioners and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Professional bearing; clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background, criminal history, and/or credit history check.

Physical Demands 

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. This position requires frequent evening and weekend work.
