Pay: $20 - $26/hr. Depending on Experience

Our Lady of Guadalupe seeks an individual who exudes excitement for their Catholic faith and has charisma to work with our mostly Latino/a youth population. This youth minister will work closely with a team of volunteers to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate a bilingual program of faith formation to prepare high school age youth for the sacrament of Confirmation. Additionally, this minister will offer activities and programs which attract and support youth in the parish.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, develops, and manages a core team to minister to the junior high and high school youth of the parish and who will develop and run the youth ministry program: Youth Group, Laudato Si Group, meetings, retreats, youth choir, socials, field trips, game nights, beach outings, etc.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Faith Formation so that the catechetical programs in the Confirmation program are consistent in spirit and content with those of Catechesis Familiar and OCIA, with a goal of establishing a whole life faith formation. This person also works to help with catechetical formation of parents of confirmation students.
  • Advocates and fosters involvement of youth in the life of the parish, including serving on various parish committees, participating in liturgies, giving testimonies at masses, and participating in other parish events.
  • Recruits and trains volunteers needed for programs: assistants, substitutes, team members, facilitators, sponsors. Conducts periodic meetings with this team of volunteers.
  • Collaborates with SDOP and the Jesuits West Province in promoting and supporting youth community organizing. Helps our youth participate in Advocacy Day, Camp Ignite, and the Ignatian Family Teach-in.
  • Plans and coordinates youth masses and the confirmation liturgy, in coordination with the pastoral liturgical team of the parish.
  • Serves as administrator and record-keeper of registration materials, attendance records, and baptismal certificates.
  • Ensures all volunteers have Safe Environment training and background checks. Monitors safety of youth. Makes presentations of Safe Environment programs to youth.
  • Takes responsibility for finances of youth ministries by preparing an annual budget, keeping track of expenditures, sponsoring fundraisers, making deposits and check requests, paying bills, etc., in conformity with diocesan financial practices.
  • Attends parish staff meetings. 
  • With input and guidance from the pastor, establishes SMART goals, and through regular one-on-one meetings with pastor, provides updates on progress. 
  • Ensures that the parish community is informed of Confirmation and Youth Ministry events, programs, etc., through various channels of communication including parish bulletin, website, and social media.
  • Maintains regular contact with the appropriate diocesan offices. Keeps current on diocesan support services.
  • Ability to work in a face-paced and ever-changing environment, responding to pastoral needs as they arise.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Requirements

Background, Education and Experience:

  • Must have a dynamic personality and vibrant faith as a practicing Catholic. Must regularly participate in the sacramental life of the Church.
  • Must be familiar with Church documents and teaching related to Catechesis and Evangelization. In particular, must be familiar with and a proponent of the values espoused in Laudato Si, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment. 
  • Must exercise synodality, that spirit of listening and learning, which is so important in our Church today.
  • Must be fluent in Spanish and English in spoken and written language and be able to relate to Mexican and Latino culture along with a diversity of cultures and groups.
  • Bachelor’s degree or youth ministry certificate and/or experience in the field.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, including time management, delegation, planning, budgeting, and the ability to balance multiple projects at one time.
  • Be highly motivated, a self-starter, creative, and energetic. Ability to network with a variety of persons and groups within and outside of the parish.
  • Proficient in technology, using MS Office products, email, and a variety of technology. Experience in social media and creation of creative marketing materials.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the parish facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
